Chatham, ON -- Disgraced Rev. Charles Sylvestre, 84--whose bishop wants him laicized (see C.I., Oct. 2006 p. 25)--was sentenced to three years in jail (Tor. Sun, Oct. 7, 2006). Judge Bruce Thomas noted Sylvestre's "very special position of trust," and said if Sylvestre were younger he would receive a much longer prison term. But because of his age and various illnesses Thomas agreed to three years, Sylvestre's estimated life expectancy.

Charles Sylvestre abused dozens of girls over a period of three decades, between 1954 and 1986, throughout Southern Ontario (Tor. Sun, Oct. 7, 2006). He pleaded guilty to 47 counts of indecent assault.
