Chase Medical: Patients At High Risk For Death Living Longer and Better with New Heart Surgery.

Business Editors/Health/Medical Writers

RICHARDSON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 2004

Marisa Di Donato, MD, Professor of Cardiology at the University of Florence History
The University of Florence evolved from the Studium Generale, which was established by the Florentine Republic in 1321. The Studium was recognized by Pope Clement VI in 1349, and authorised to grant regular degrees.
in Florence, Italy, and Director of Cardiovascular Research at San Donato Hospital in Milan, Italy, reported results on heart failure patients who received the TRISVR(TM) (tri-saver) surgery, during the Society of Thoracic Surgeons 40th Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas “San Antonio” redirects here. San Antonio is the second most populous city in Texas, the third most populous metropolitan area in Texas, and is the seventh most populous city in the United States. As of the 2006 U.S.
, held January 26-28, 2004.

The study, which includes 175 patients, showed an 89% survival rate in those who have been followed over a 19-month period. "We have observed a marked improvement resulting from the restoration of a better left ventricular geometry. In these patients, mitral regurgitation decreased significantly and functional status improved," said Di Donato. "These results are impressive for patients with post myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy; and who are at high risk of death."

Di Donato is a lead investigator for the TRISVR Multi-Center Clinical Registry and actively enrolls patients. The TRISVR registry documents clinical outcomes relative to patients undergoing surgical ventricular restoration (SVR(R)) with use of the Chase Medical endoventricular shaping device called the Mannequin(TM). Participants in the registry led by principal investigators John Conte, M.D. of Johns Hopkins University Johns Hopkins University, mainly at Baltimore, Md. The TRISVR procedure, a surgical alternative to treat heart failure, utilizes the Mannequin device to resize and reshape the damaged heart very close to its original form, helping the weak heart to pump more efficiently. Di Donato's information showed the TRISVR procedure helped to significantly improve the overall pumping function of the damaged heart; improve the level of heart failure classification; and improve the heart valve function, resulting in an overall improved quality of life and lengthened life for patients.

According to the American Heart Association American Heart Association (AHA),

, congestive heart failure congestive heart failure, inability of the heart to expel sufficient blood to keep pace with the metabolic demands of the body. In the healthy individual the heart can tolerate large increases of workload for a considerable length of time. , usually caused by a prior heart attack, is a fatal disease affecting nearly 5 million people in the United States. By the year 2010, the number of people diagnosed is expected to increase by 40%, to nearly 7 million patients. Reports indicate that more than 1.8 million patients suffering from congestive heart failure could benefit from the TRISVR procedure in the US alone.

"I urge my fellow colleagues to consider treatment options such as the TRISVR procedure when current therapies are not working," said Tea Acuff, cardiac surgeon and researcher with CRSTI Clinical Research Institute, following his presentation at the 7th Annual NewEra Cardiac Care: Innovation & Technology meeting. "A large portion of heart failure patients are being underserved, and need to be considered for options beyond conventional approaches."

Heart failure patients have traditionally been managed with medications prescribed to treat symptoms such as angina, fatigue and shortness of breath Shortness of Breath Definition

Shortness of breath, or dyspnea, is a feeling of difficult or labored breathing that is out of proportion to the patient's level of physical activity.
. The TRISVR procedure is designed to treat the problem causing those symptoms. Problems develop because the left ventricle, or main pumping chamber of the heart, becomes weakened from an injury such as a heart attack. The ventricle, now enlarged, out of shape and stretched thin, is not able to pump blood properly through the body. The Mannequin, the first medical device designed to reshape and resize the damaged heart back to a more normal shape and size, allows cardiac surgeons to standardize the procedure and to significantly improve the heart's ability to pump blood more effectively.
