Mayor Menino Announces City's First WiFi Pilot Project

") has been selected to build and operate the first wireless broadband High-speed wireless transmission of data. What is "high" speed is always a changing number. Wireless systems are typically slower than land-based, wireline networks. In the past, wireless broadband started at 250 Kbps, whereas land-based broadband was generally considered to start at T1  network for the city of Boston's WiFi project. Planning and construction for the pilot network is scheduled to commence within the next few weeks.

Mayor Menino said, "the Grove Hall and Dudley Square initiative, which is really a network, not just a hot spot, sends a clear message to the neighborhoods that bringing service to everyone is our number one priority."

"Building an actual neighborhood network so quickly would not have been possible without the support of these companies and Local 103," noted Pam Reeve, a former software executive who was named by Menino in July to serve as interim chief executive of the wireless initiative. Reeve said installation of the equipment is expected to begin later this year.

Mr. Oyster commented, "Pam Reeve and her team have shown great vision and leadership by bringing the Wireless Task Force recommendations from concept to this point so rapidly. We look forward to continuing to work with Pam and her team of professionals to bring the network on-line, and allow Boston to realize its goals."
