Charter High Definition Service Debuts in Five Markets.

) today launched its Charter High Definition Service in five markets, enabling customers with high-definition televisions high-definition television (HDTV)

Any system producing significantly greater picture resolution than that of the ordinary 525-line (625-line in Europe) television screen. Conventional television transmits signals in analog form.
 (HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates ) to receive HD programming from their local cable system. The five markets are Alhambra/Pasadena and Glendale/Burbank, Calif.; University Park/Highland Park, Texas; Miami Beach Miami Beach, city (1990 pop. 92,639), Dade co., SE Fla., on an island between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean; inc. 1915. Charter customers who sign up for the HDTV service will be enabled technically to receive dedicated HDTV programming from HBO Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO)

"As HDTV gains momentum, more programs will be made available in the high-definition format," Mr. Pietri said. "When you combine HDTV technology with Charter's advanced hybrid fiber-coax infrastructure, you have a winning combination that truly demonstrates the power of broadband."

Mr. Pietri said the five markets where Charter launched HDTV service today are built on Scientific Atlanta platforms. Customers subscribing to Charter High Definition Service will pay a monthly fee for use of a Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 3100HD digital set-top.

Mr. Pietri said the company is on schedule with previously announced plans to initiate Charter High Definition Service in the third quarter of this year in Kalamazoo, Mich. and St. Louis. Because these markets are built on Motorola platforms, the Motorola DCT-5100 will be used to deliver HD service.
