Charlton boasts All-Star team; U12 softball champs at Hopedale tourney.Recently the Charlton's U-12 Girls softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies' All-Stars participated in a weekend-long tournament in Hopedale. During the first day of the tournament the girls set an impressive tone with great pitching and strong defense and offense, which included a home run by Charlton's Lauren DeStephano. They finished day one of the tournament with a 3-0 record. The competition grew more intense as Charlton was able to win against the Hopedale B team in the semi-finals and go on to the finals against the Hopedale A team for the championship. Charlton got out to an early lead at the bottom of the first inning in·ning n. 1. a.
