Charlie's view of the North East on sale; 50 years of street scenes and local characters captured.

FOR almost 50 years, artist Charlie Rogers John Edward Rogers (born June 19, 1976 in Cliffwood, New Jersey) is a former American football running back and wide receiver in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks (1999-2001), the Buffalo Bills (2002) and the Miami Dolphins (2003).  has been recording Tyneside street life. Charlie, who was born near Saltwell Park Saltwell Park is a Victorian park situated in Gateshead, England. Also known as the "People's Park" and part of Gateshead's heritage since it opened to the public in 1876, the park is steeped in history.  in Gateshead and who now lives in Low Fell, made his first sketch of a back lane behind the Five Wands pub in Bensham in the town.

The 80-year-old artist has exhibited four times at the Royal Academy, once at the Royal Scottish Academy The Royal Scottish Academy is Scotland’s premier organisation promoting contemporary Scottish art. Founded in 1826, the RSA maintains a unique position in Scotland as an independently funded institution led by eminent artists and architects whose purpose is to promote and  and is a life member of Gateshead Art Society. Now 20 of his paintings are to go on sale at Anderson and Garland's Newcastle auction rooms tomorrow. They include images of Newcastle's Hoppings, the Grainger Market The Grainger Market is a covered market in Newcastle upon Tyne. It was constructed as part of the 19th century redevelopment of the city to replace markets on the site of Grey Street.

It is home to perhaps the smallest branch of Marks & Spencer, a market stall.

But many of Charlie's works have been of street scenes and local characters.

He began painting at the age of 34 while recovering from an injury picked up as a talented amateur footballer.

After a variety of jobs, Charlie was made redundant as a groundsman and turned to painting. "After sketching the back lane I thought I would do one or two more street corner scenes," he said.

His first exhibition was at the Univision Gallery in the Bigg Market in 1965.

Two years later his first showing at the Royal Academy included an image of Cotfield Street near the Five Wands in Gateshead. The street is now long gone and Charlie said: "They used to say the bulldozers followed me around because after I painted streets they would come down. I reckon reck·on
