yesterday backed a drive to beat age discrimination in the workplace.

As patron of the charity Age Concern,he attended the launch of its Business Pledge campaign to encourage employers to recruit the over-50s.

He told around 20 company managers and directors gathered at a reception in Tower Hill,London, that he had noticed about 15 years ago that workforces were getting younger.

He thought this was perhaps a ``rash move'' but now ``the pendulum is beginning to swing back'', he said. ``It seemed to me crazy to lose so much of that knowledge, experience and wisdom represented by the people over 50.

``I'm delighted people are beginning to realise what the dangers have been in this kind of approach.''
