Charles Norman Mason awarded Rome Prize.

 member Charles Norman Mason, of Alabama, has been awarded the Rome Prize The Rome Prize is a prestigious American award made annually, through a national competition, to 15 emerging artists (working in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design, Historic Preservation and Conservation, Literature, Musical Composition, or Visual Arts) and to 15 scholars  in Musical Composition.

Mason, a music professor at Birmingham-Southern, will spend 11 months in Rome composing. Four of the many works he will be composing are a commission from Karen Bentley Pollick for a violin and piano duet, a guitar quartet and chamber orchestra piece for the Corona Guitar Kvartet of Denmark, five dance pieces for a commission from Southern Danceworks, and a commission from Craig Hultgren for a violin, cello and tape piece.

 in October in honor of the 150th anniversary of Birmingham-Southern College.

Established in 1894 and chartered by an Act of Congress in 1905, the American Academy in Rome American Academy in Rome, founded in 1894 as the American School of Architecture in Rome by Charles F. McKim and enlarged in 1897 with the founding of the American Academy in Rome for students of architecture, sculpture, and painting. , which awards the Rome Prize every year, is a center that sustains independent artistic pursuits and humanistic studies.
