Charles Norman Mason awarded Rome Prize.MTNA MTNA Music Teachers National Association MTNA Middle Tennessee Nursery Association (McMinnville, Tennessee) member Charles Norman Mason, of Alabama, has been awarded the Rome Prize The Rome Prize is a prestigious American award made annually, through a national competition, to 15 emerging artists (working in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design, Historic Preservation and Conservation, Literature, Musical Composition, or Visual Arts) and to 15 scholars in Musical Composition. Mason, a music professor at Birmingham-Southern, will spend 11 months in Rome composing. Four of the many works he will be composing are a commission from Karen Bentley Pollick for a violin and piano duet, a guitar quartet and chamber orchestra piece for the Corona Guitar Kvartet of Denmark, five dance pieces for a commission from Southern Danceworks, and a commission from Craig Hultgren for a violin, cello and tape piece.
