Charles Enhances EXchange Mux(R) II Product Line with New Hardware and Software Additions.

ROLLING MEADOWS Rolling Meadows, city (1990 pop. 22,591), Cook co., NE Ill., a suburb of Chicago; inc. 1955. There is research and development and the manufacture of office supplies and electronic components. , ILL. -- Charles Industries Ltd., a privately held, diversified manufacturing and high-technology company today announced that it has completed a suit of product enhancements to its EXchange Mux II Optical Multiplexer See multiplexor and multiplexing.

, including a new integrated fan tray option, chassis rack, and version 9.0 software. The new product features provide Charles' service provider customers with cost savings and additional deployment flexibility, while saving valuable rack space in their central offices.

By incorporating an optional integrated fan into a three rack unit A unit of measurement of the height of a rack-mounted device. One rack unit, or RU, is 1.75". See rack mounted.  (3RU) chassis rack, Charles enables additional shelves to be deployed in the same rack increasing the total number of T1/E1 terminations per bay. Charles' EXchange Mux II continues to offer one of the industry's highest density platforms available.

The EXchange Mux II has been designed with superior power/heat management characteristics. As the number of EXchange Mux II shelves installed in a rack increase (and depending on the associated environmental conditions) fan units may be necessary to achieve optimal system performance. Until now, the fan unit was an external device that required separate alarm and power cabling as well as additional rack space.

"The integrated fan option allows our customers to fully maximize their use of rack space," said Dominic Imbrogno, Product Manager at Charles Industries. "It is an ideal solution for those customers that have a high concentration of multiplexers in a bay," Imbrogno added.

"We have been successfully deploying the EXchange Mux II in our network for some time," said Larry Knehr, Data Communications data communications, application of telecommunications technology to the problem of transmitting data, especially to, from, or between computers. In popular usage, it is said that data communications make it possible for one computer to "talk" with another.  Engineer for Buckeye buckeye: see horse chestnut.

Telesystem. "We welcome the new integrated fan option because it enables us to economically stack EXchange Mux II chassis in a bay to replace a high concentration of 1RU M13s that are beyond their useful life," Knehr said.

The 1RU fan tray fan unit has 3 individual fans with integrated alarm reporting in the event of a failure. The fan unit does not increase the overall dimensions of the shelf and fits in the space above the service modules, within the confines of the 3RU chassis. Alarm indicators are displayed visually via front panel LEDs and are also reported through the EXchange Mux II management system. Air is pulled up through the EXchange Mux II and exhausted out the side of the fan unit. The fan unit is plugged directly into the existing 3RU chassis with power and alarm connections provided through the same connector. The EXchange Mux II has proven to be one of the most flexible multiplexing multiplexing, in communication, technique whereby two or more independent messages, or information-bearing signals, are carried by a single common medium, or channel.  solutions available today.

The EXchange Mux II is being offered in both 2RU and 3RU chassis. Both chassis versions utilize the same service modules, however the 3RU contains taller RIM interface modules for electrical connections An electrical connection between discrete points allows the flow of electrons, (current). These support standard Amphenol 64 pin connectors for T1/E1 terminations as well as BNC (hardware) BNC - A connector for coaxial cable such as that used for some video connections and RG58 "cheapernet" connections. A BNC connector has a bayonet-type shell with two small knobs on the female connector which lock into spiral slots in the male connector when it is twisted  for DS3 termination. The 3RU chassis is the industry's smallest high density M13 shelf with standard Amphenol connectors for T1/E1 termination.

With Charles' EXchange Mux II, T1s or E1s can be multiplexed and transported as an OC-3 or STM-1 using newly released Version released version - release  9.0 software. The platform allows customers to choose a number of multiplexing options including T1 to T3 to OC-3, T1 to VT-5 to STS-1 to OC-3, E1 to T3 to OC-3, E1 to VT2 to STS-1 to OC-3, E1 to TU-12 to AU4 to STM-1, or T1 to T3 to AU4 to STM-1. Universal module slots provide maximum flexibility to meet any application. Low power consumption and small footprint make it ideal for collocations.
