Charles Carlson Recommends the Following Stock: HD.

Business Editors

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 2002

The New Year brings the possibility of new changes in tax policy, especially where dividends are concerned. Charles Carlson looks at the dual benefits of dividend reform, and offers a battered bat·ter 1

stock that could be useful for patient investors. Read his take on Home Depot The Home Depot (NYSE: HD) is an American retailer of home improvement and construction products and services.

Headquartered in Vinings, just outside Atlanta in unincorporated Cobb County, Georgia, Home Depot employs more than 355,000 people and operates 2,164 big-box

Here are the highlights from the Featured Expert column:

Bottom line: Better tax treatment for dividends is not just good tax policy. It would also go a long way toward increasing the transparency (1) The quality of being able to see through a material. The terms transparency and translucency are often used synonymously; however, transparent would technically mean "seeing through clear glass," while translucent would mean "seeing through frosted glass." See alpha blending.  of corporate financial statements.

Growth companies that stop growing can be terrible investments. Just ask Home Depot (NYSE:HD) shareholders. The stock has plummeted 52% from its 52- week high of more than $52. The big question, of course, is whether Home Depot's current ills are short term or long term in nature. While Carlson doesn't expect the stock to be a big performer over the next 6-12 months, he is intrigued by its current low price.

Home Depot currently trades at just 14 times expected fiscal 2004 (ending in January) earnings of $1.79 per share. True, it would not be surprising to see that earnings estimate decline over the next few months. Still, even if you back that estimate off to $1.60 per share, the price/earnings multiple is still well below levels of previous years. Thus, a lot of bad news is already baked into these shares.
