A WIRRAL-BASED national charity is launching a campaign urging parents to talk to their children about sex after receiving thousands of calls on the issue.

Parentline Plus, which is based in Birkenhead, began the campaign after a recent report revealed how difficult parents find this issue.

The study, called ``Talking about sex and relationships, what parents worry about'' suggests that, when teenagers talk to their parents about sex, they are more likely to delay sexual activity and use contraception contraception: see birth control.

.

But even though a recent poll revealed that 86% of parents feel strongly that there would be fewer teenage pregnancies if more parents talked to their children about sex, relationships and contraception, there is still a reluctance to start those conversations. In fact, some half of the teenagers questioned say they receive little or no information from their parents.

The charity, which received 80, 000 calls about parenting last year, believes that parents should have support and information. They say 11% of calls to Parentline Plus account for this issue, and hope the new materials will have a significant impact in the number of calls and requests about the Time to Talk campaign.

According to the Brook Advisory Service, which advises young people on sexual health, almost 30% of young men and almost 26% of young women report having had intercourse before their 16th birthday.

The posters and cards have been developed following extensive consultation with parents and will be displayed in venues across the country, including doctors' surgeries.

, based in Wirral, welcomed the campaign. She said: ``It is important that parents and carers keep an open dialogue with their children about sex and relationships. They need to feel supported in doing this andParentline Plus can offer that support. ''

Morag Reid, outreach and education manager from Wirral Brook Advisory Centre, said: ``There are often large gaps in young people's sexual understanding, and confusion over what sources to trust.

``Many wish they could ask their parents -- but parents find it hard to get accurate information and to approach this tricky topic.

``With specialist support such as Time To Talk, we can really begin this process, before those young people become parents themselves. ''
