 from Netherton (Letters April 6). I thought it was just me who thought that charity shops had become exorbitant.

The trouble is that the shops (not all) are now employing assistants on a wage, where they used to do the sales voluntarily. Also if you take a nice article such as a piece of cut glass in they are whisked off to one of the 'posher' branches where they can double the price. I once took half a dozen paperback books in mint condition

Mint condition is an expression used in the description of pre-owned goods. Originally, the phrase comes from the way collectors describe the condition of coins.

If any of your readers have items to donate, the best place is your local hospice hospice, program of humane and supportive care for the terminally ill and their families; the term also applies to a professional facility that provides care to dying patients who can no longer be cared for at home.  shop, where they will receive all the profit.
