Skal International Bahrain has been spearheading the annual campaign for the past 16 years. The cards are created in two styles, they include traditional Arab themes for Eid Al Adha to be marked on November 27 and Christmas next month. The traditional Arabic designs are painted in watercolours, while the festive cards are done using bright-pigmented ink and airbrushing. They are found on the beach at night, flying over Bahrain's skyline and driving Formula 1 cars in the desert. Ms Goode said that she was involved in making the cards 16 years ago when she heard about the hospitality group Skal and its goal to raise money for local charities. Every year Ms Goode creates eight new designs. She begins with an idea, takes photographs to inspire her and then paints her design. "I always kept it going because I benefit from it and I always have people asking me what the latest designs are," said Ms Goode, who is married to Bapco systems analyst Jeff and has two sons - Jamie, 22, and Howie, 19. She has been drawing and painting since she was at school and worked in several local magazines. "I have always been interested in art and studied at Maidstone Art College in Kent," she said. "All cards show Bahrain and most of the proceeds go back into Bahrain." Cards are sold with envelopes in packs of eight, priced at BD2.500 per pack and 500 fils go to local charity. In the past, Skal has used the money to help local needy families during Ramadan. For companies or individuals with large orders an overprinting service is offered, which includes delivery. If one of the designs is preferred it can be printed as a special order but must be a minimum of 200 cards. They will go on sale at various craft fairs including the Awali Craft Fair at Bapco Club, Awali, on Saturday from 12.30pm to 5pm and the American Women's Association's Annual Fall Craft Fair at the Bapco Club on December 5. They will also be available at a mini craft fair at Piece of Cake, off Budaiya Highway, from 9.30am to 2.30pm. Another opportunity is at an open house sale in Awali on November 19 from 2.30pm to 6.30pm and December 20 from 10am to 2.30pm. The Skal Club was created in Paris in 1932 to encourage travel and friendship between countries. Its members are people associated with the travel and tourism industry.
