Charity is saved by neighbours; Age Concern office lives on.

A CHARITY which helps thousands of older people in Huddersfield Huddersfield, city (1991 pop. 147,825), Kirklees metropolitan district, N central England, on the Colne River. Its textile industry, including cotton, woolen, and rayon goods, is important. Other products are machinery, iron goods, chemicals, and dyed fabrics.  has been saved from closure.

AgeConcernKirklees,which has an office on Cross Church Street, was facing the axe in November November: see month.  because of falling income and rising costs.

 branch has stepped in to save the Huddersfield town centre office and another advice centre in Cleckheaton from closure.

The merger, which creates the new group Age Concern Calderdale and Kirklees, secures 70 jobs in Huddersfield and Cleckheaton.

Ken Ransley has moved from the Halifax branch to the Huddersfield office to help with the transition.

He said: "We managed to get a rescue package together just before the redundancies started. In these economic time it's good that people aren't getting put out of work."

Mr Ransley, an insurance arranger for Age Concern, thinks the future is bright for the charity in Huddersfield.

He said: "We're hoping to build on the Age Concern name and push our insurance service, which can save older people a lot of money. A lot of people don't like to talk on the phone, so it's good that they can come in here and speak to a friendly face."

Age Concern shops in Holmfirth and Dewsbury are not affected by the merger because they are run by Age Concern England.
