Chariton Valley Selects Luminous Networks for Metro Area Deployment; Independent US Telco Chooses Luminous to Rapidly Grow Revenue-Generating Services.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 4, 2003

Missouri-based Chariton Valley Telephone Corp. announced today the selection of Luminous Networks' metro optical access platform to deliver voice, data and video services to their residential and business customers. The service provider is using the Luminous platform to grow revenues for T1 voice services, Gigabit Ethernet-based video services, and 10/100 Ethernet data services for customers in 21 cities across their statewide network.

Chariton Valley selected Luminous' PacketWave(TM) metro platform based on its capability to deliver revenue-generating voice and data services over one efficient network, and to provide the carrier with significant savings in both capital outlay capital outlay

and operational costs. Alternative approaches would have required Chariton Valley to use multiple overlay networks A logical network that runs on top of another network. For example, peer-to-peer networks are overlay networks on the Internet. They use their own addressing system for determining how files are distributed and accessed, which provides a layer on top of the Internet's IP addressing.  to deliver the same set of services, at significantly higher costs. In addition, the Luminous platform incorporates a highly efficient network management system that allows Chariton Valley to bring up new customer services in a fraction of the time required with alternate approaches.

William Biere, general manager of Chariton Valley stated, "The efficient, packet-based approach of Luminous' platform was a decisive factor Noun 1. decisive factor - a point or fact or remark that settles something conclusively

Luminous continues to gain momentum in the market, with the increasing acceptance of our packet-based metro platform by a range of highly visible carriers including independent telcos, US cable providers, and carriers throughout China and other international markets."

Chariton Valley has chosen the Luminous platform as a key transport vehicle to carry traffic over their metropolitan area networks throughout Missouri. Chariton Valley is using the Luminous PacketWave platform to back-haul DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. Chariton Valley has purchased Luminous' carrier-class PacketWave M-Series metro optical access platform, which features redundant dual switch fabrics for network reliability.

The PacketWave architecture assures Chariton Valley of network reliability and the resiliency to survive network outages in less than 50 milliseconds. PacketWave is a highly efficient metro platform, with the capability to aggregate services from multiple customers for transport over a shared optical network.

Telecom carriers that have deployed Luminous' PacketWave recognize the value of RPR as an efficient transport approach for delivering multi-services in metropolitan area networks. Carriers have rapidly deployed it for a range of revenue-generating services.

The platform improves operational efficiency by eliminating network complexity, simplifying management, scaling capacity, and reducing costs. PacketWave's packet-based architecture significantly reduces transport and operational costs, since it carries voice, data and video services over a single network with a common management and provisioning system.
