The Community Service Program rewards a chapter's sustained effort in providing volunteer service to surrounding communities. Chapters must complete a minimum of one year of continuous voluntary service or demonstrate leadership in organizing, implementing, and/or administering a continuous voluntary service program.

There are numerous awards available during chapter competition. All ASMC chapters are eligible to receive the Community Service Award. Chapters may perform service in the following categories:

* Services Arts and Humanities

* Education

* The Environment

* Health

* Human Services

* International Volunteering

* Public Safety

* Youth

To be considered in chapter competition, each project must address why participation is required, the actual accomplishments, the impact of the activity within the chapter and the community, unusual challenges to overcome, and approaches used in resolving problems or providing services.

How to Get Started

Set up a committee with at least four members to seek and direct community involvement. One suggestion for a committee name is Caring Comptrollers COMPTROLLERS. There are officers who bear this name, in the treasury depart @ment of the United States.
     2. There are two comptrollers. It is the duty of the first to examine all accounts settled by the first and fifth auditors, and certify the balances arising
. Invite members to a brainstorming session to derive ideas for community support. For those members who cannot attend the brainstorming session, request at least one idea from each one. Submit a flyer requesting ideas chapter luncheons or other events.

Take the list derived from the preceding activities and have committee members determine the top 5 to 10 ideas. Different variables determine how many projects a chapter will need to pursue. The number of projects required for chapter competition will vary, depending on chapter size. As the program progresses, more opportunities will surface. Also, interest will increase once members get involved and see the results.

Pay-off

The Community Service Program is a win-win endeavor. It promotes member participation and public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most , and it facilitates new membership growth.

Moreover, participation in this program provides a catalyst for members to get to better know themselves and each other while providing immeasurable service to others. Members start out thinking that they are doing all of the giving by volunteering but quickly realize that they are the ones blessed by the encounter.

Rebecca L. Grimm is a management analyst in the Studies Analysis Division, Directorate of Resource Management, at Fort Leonard Wood Fort Leonard Wood, U.S. army post, 71,000 acres (28,700 hectares), S central Mo.; est. 1940. It is one of the largest basic-training centers in the United States and also provides training for army engineers. , Missouri. Her 16 years with the federal government includes positions as an accountant, a budget analyst, and a management analyst. Currently she is working on A-76 studies. Rebecca is a member of the Ozark Chapter of ASMC.
