Chapman, Thomas and Lauer Named COOs of SAFECO's Property/Casualty Enterprises.


SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 6, 1998--SAFECO announced today that, in addition to their positions as senior vice presidents of SAFECO's property and casualty insurance companies, Donald Chapman, William Thomas William Thomas or Bill Thomas may refer to:
  • William Thomas was the alias of Wilhelm Thomas, who gained notoriety in the Adolph Beck case.
  • William Thomas (American football), National Football League player for the Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders
 and Dale Lauer have been named chief operating officers Chief Operating Officer (COO)

The officer of a firm responsible for day-to-day management, usually the president or an executive vice-president.
 of SAFECO's three property and casualty enterprises.

In the position of chief operating officer, each will be responsible for all operations associated with the commercial lines, personal lines and business insurance enterprises and will continue to report to Randy Stoddard, president of SAFECO Property and Casualty Insurance Companies.

Chapman, who began his career with SAFECO in 1962, was named chief operating officer for SAFECO Commercial Insurance, the enterprise that writes insurance for medium-to-large commercial accounts. A graduate of the University of Georgia Organization

, has been named chief operating officer of SAFECO's personal lines enterprise. A graduate of the United States Military Academy United States Military Academy, at West Point, N.Y.; for training young men and women to be officers in the U.S. army; founded and opened in 1802. The original act provided that the Corps of Engineers stationed at West Point should constitute a military academy, but  at West Point, Thomas rose to the rank of captain before leaving military service and joining SAFECO in 1971. As head of SAFECO's personal lines enterprise, Thomas oversees the company's largest business enterprise. Thomas and his wife live in Redmond, Wash.

Lauer has been named chief operating officer of American States Business Insurance, the enterprise that writes insurance for small-to-medium-sized businesses. A graduate of Ohio State University Ohio State University, main campus at Columbus; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1870, opened 1873 as Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, renamed 1878. There are also campuses at Lima, Mansfield, Marion, and Newark. , Lauer joined SAFECO in 1972. He has earned CPCU and AIM industry designations during his career. He and his family live in Indianapolis.
