Back To School Program Aims to Empower Students and Communities to Build Positive Change

NEW YORK -- Channel One News, the preeminent news and content provider for teens, Maria Menounos, "Access Hollywood" and "Today Show" correspondent, and the charity "Take Action Hollywood!" have entered into an exclusive philanthropic partnership aimed to empower young people to volunteer and to build positive change, it was announced today. Beginning October 9, the 'Take Action One Cup" initiative will be introduced to students through the award winning Channel One News broadcast, reaching over 6 million students nationwide through middle schools and high schools.

The "Take Action One Cup" will be an annual competition designed to empower students and communities nationwide and whose ultimate goal serves to nurture young people to work collaboratively to improve social conditions on several fronts - locally, nationally and abroad. Groups of students, each from middle and high schools around the country, will compete in their efforts to implement systems and programs that help individuals and/or society. The group of students that exhibit the greatest amount of creativity, dedication and impact in their efforts as judged by both their peers, through viral online voting and campaigning, and by a panel of academics, experienced pro-social activists and celebrities, will be awarded the "Take Action One Cup", Channel One News and "Take Action Hollywood!"'s most prestigious honor.

The winning team effort will be awarded the grand prize of $5,000 to support their school's future efforts in promoting good works, with additional prize money granted to four semi-finalist schools to aid their programs. Winning students will each receive a mini DV camcorder, empowering them to capture and document events or issues important to them, while also allowing them to realize their individual journalistic talents and the power of their own voice. Additionally, the winning team may have the opportunity to participate in a valuable learning experience through an internship program to gain knowledge across different aspects of the show, such as the opportunity to engage with the show's producers and reporters and to contribute to the daily broadcast.

In addition to the significant monetary contribution the winning school and team members will receive, recipients will take possession of the official "Take Action One Cup". The cup, original in design, massive in size, and with presence reminiscent of the NHL's Stanley Cup, will have the winning school and participating students and teachers names inscribed upon it. It will be awarded to the school and will remain there for the majority of the following year, until it is awarded again to the next deserving recipients.
