) promises to accelerate cable networks' entrance into the realm of on-demand television. Dubbed Channel Link, it's a new, cost-effective software platform that enables cable networks to extend their brand to subscription VOD See video-on-demand.

 and `virtual channel' tiers.

Debuted today at NCTA, Channel Link provides an interactive overlay to the channel the viewer is watching to enable interactive functionality. It reflects the network's branded "look and feel" and enables viewers to choose VOD options within the family of programs they're watching. For example, a viewer watching Discovery's Animal Planet could "click" and browse through a selection of video options from Discovery's breadth of topical programming.

Cable operators only require a simple software upgrade to their SeaChange VOD Systems to support this powerful service. It's like middleware, but requires none of the complex integration of additional servers, routers and other ancillary equipment. With hundreds of servers installed in cities for Adelphia, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox' Hospitality Network, Rogers and Time Warner, the SeaChange VOD system is an economical platform that empowers cable operators to offer compelling new VOD services.

Discovery Networks is excited by the possibilities to extend their brand to interactivity. "We offer a wide range of programming choices within the Discovery family of networks, and the ability to help viewers gain easy access to the content on our VOD tiers is important to us," said David Karp, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Discovery Digital Networks & New Media Ventures. "Channel Link affords Discovery Networks the opportunity to tap into our vast video library to offer audiences and advertisers the real-world, high quality entertainment they've come to expect from our networks."

BBC AMERICA BBC America is an American television network, owned and operated by BBC Worldwide, which was launched on March 29, 1998, available on both cable and satellite. It is one of two BBC branded channels broadcast in the United States, the other being global news channel, BBC World.  also sees benefits to Channel Link. "This application is compelling because it allows BBC AMERICA viewers to seamlessly move into BBC BBC

AMERICA's VOD environment without getting lost in a growing array of options," said Parule Basu-Barua, Vice President of Online and Business Development, BBC AMERICA. "With Channel Link we see an opportunity to offer our vast library of video programming to an audience that is already familiar with the style and quality of BBC AMERICA."

Channel Link is an extensible software system for the SeaChange VOD platform and is designed to operate with widely deployed low-end Motorola and Scientific-Atlanta settops. It is being demonstrated on the Motorola DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) An algorithm that is widely used for data compression. Similar to Fast Fourier Transform, DCT converts data (pixels, waveforms, etc.) into sets of frequencies. The first frequencies in the set are the most meaningful; the latter, the least.  2000 settop running with TV Guide's interactive program guide. It is available in the third quarter to SeaChange/Motorola customers, while Scientific-Atlanta variations will be available shortly after.

"Its all about making VOD simple, for the viewer, the cable operator, and the program provider," said George Breen George Thomas Breen (born July 19, 1935) is a retired freestyle swimmer from the United States, who has won four Olympic medals (one silver, three bronze) in his career. Breen twice broke the world record in the 1500m freestyle. , President, Digital Video Arts. "As VOD choices become more extensive, it's important to be able to ensure that viewers are not lost in a sea of options. The strength of Channel Link is associating interactivity with a particular channel, while streamling the technology for cable operators."

For cable networks and programmers, Digital Video Arts provides design, development, testing, verification and deployment services for Channel Link. For cable operators, Channel Link can be optioned on their existing SeaChange VOD System.
