Changing the face of city.


Three planning proposals which would change the face of chunks of Newcastle will be outlined to councillors this week.

Planners say the two city centre bids and one in Scotswood are considered "particularly significant in terms of their scale and form" and will go to Friday's meeting of the council's Development Control Committee.

Two of the applications are within the Discovery Quarter of the city centre. GMD (company) GMD - Full name: "GMD - Forschungszentrum Informationstechnik GmbH" (German National Research Center for Information Technology).

Before April 1995, GMD stood for "Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung" - National Research Center for Computer Science,

 on Wellington Street/Bath Lane, while Unite have applied for a student housing development on the Benfield Motors showroom site on Railway Street. The third application is for up to 1,800 homes on Armstrong Road in Scotswood.
