In an effort to ensure the public better understands and responds to engineering messages, and to encourage underrepresented groups to enter engineering, members of this committee have developed this tool for improving the public image of engineering and its communications whether in learning centers, engineering schools, professional societies, corporations that support education, or agencies and labs. The result of an 18-month study, this reviews the process of developing messages that promote public understanding of engineering, presents a positioning statement on positive themes and messages, offers research on what works to communicate technical messages to the public, and makes recommendations for further action. Appendices include a range of data tables of online surveys, including responses from African American and Hispanic adults and teens.
