) to unveil a ground-breaking e-services solution for the EDA (1) (Electronic Design Automation) Using the computer to design, lay out, verify and simulate the performance of electronic circuits on a chip or printed circuit board.  industry.

This new solution will enable both companies' best-of-breed software and hardware to be used in the highly flexible and distributed design environment made possible by the Web. The new approach will allow Monterey and its customers to offer virtual extensions to their own customers' CAD and design infrastructures, enabling global 24x7 design by providing on-demand, remote access to both software and hardware through secured, high-bandwidth internet and intranet connections to worldwide data centers.

As part of this new e-services solution, Monterey will be offering eDolphin(TM), a Web-based version of Dolphin dolphin, fish

(TM), its complete In One Pass(TM) physical design system. eDolphin becomes the central component of a solution that includes software, hardware, network infrastructure, security, information technology (IT) and application support, eliminating time-consuming software delivery, installation and initial setup tasks traditionally associated with EDA software tools.

"To truly allow collaborative Web-based design requires an unprecedented level of automation which is offered only by Dolphin," said Dr. Jacques Benkoski, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Monterey Design Systems. "By partnering with HP and offering secure, global, and constant Web-based access to Dolphin, Monterey is leveraging the Web with new, flexible business models that will better serve not only our customers, but our customer's customers with a complete e-services solution."

"Fujitsu's global strategy has been focused on the Web as we recognize the importance that it will have in the market place. The prevalence of the Web provides the opportunity for companies to engage more efficiently and thus bring a greater value to customers," stated Kiminori Fujisaku, general manager of World Wide System LSI LSI: see integrated circuit.

Technology of Fujitsu Semiconductor Group. "Monterey's eDolphin provides Web-based design and enhanced flexibility for implementation of physical design flow on the Web."

In addition to the technical advancement that eDolphin represents, Monterey will offer pioneering open licensing models that are more flexible than current EDA licensing models. The new Web-based models allow users to access major software and hardware infrastructures for design projects that are sometimes as short as one month. This solution adapts to the real needs of the customers, decreases total cost of ownership (TCO (1) (Total Cost of Ownership) The cost of using a computer. It includes the cost of the hardware, software and upgrades as well as the cost of the inhouse staff and/or consultants that provide training and technical support. See ROI. ), and provides an alternative to long capital budgeting cycles involved in purchasing these products outright. Monterey, HP Support Remote Data Centers

As part of the agreement between Monterey and HP, the companies will work with selected co-location service providers to operate several data centers across the U.S., with additional worldwide centers planned for full deployment in 2001. The centers will house UNIX UNIX

system-based HP 9000 N-Class technical servers where customers can directly access and run eDolphin physical design software from the customers' own offices as if the hardware and software were located on site. Staff members from co-location partners will provide complete IT support to ensure the integrity and security of the data as well as the highest quality of services at the data centers. In addition, Monterey will continue to provide complete support to customers using eDolphin.

"The Internet changes the playing field for the industry, and those companies that develop new programs and new alliances to leverage it strategically will drive new revenue streams and create new efficiencies," said Bruce Toal, marketing manager for HP's Technical Computing computing - computer  Division. "We are very pleased to be playing a leading role with Monterey to provide an e-services solution that improves reliability, response time and turnaround time (1) In batch processing, the time it takes to receive finished reports after submission of documents or files for processing. In an online environment, turnaround time is the same as response time.  for EDA customers."

eDolphin Capabilities, Pricing and Availability

eDolphin will provide the full physical design capabilities of Monterey Design's flagship product A primary product of a company, which is typically why the company was founded and/or what made it well known. For example, MS-DOS, Windows and the Microsoft Office suite have been flagship products of Microsoft. CorelDRAW is a flagship product of Corel Corporation. , Dolphin, and will have added features specifically focused on Web-based design including local or on-demand remote job submission, batch and interactive interface to launch jobs and monitor progress, and secured data transactions over the internet.

eDolphin will be available for public demonstration at the beginning of March and will be available in production form in late Q2 '00 in the U.S. to a select group of customers. It is expected to be available to a wider group of customers starting in late Q3'00. Optional 24x7 applications support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services  can also be purchased separately from Monterey Design Systems. Pricing will be customized to the individual customer infrastructure requirements and other parameters such as project size and duration, geographical location, number of servers, and bandwidth.

About Dolphin and Monterey Design Systems

Monterey Design Systems' Dolphin is a breakthrough physical design system that directly addresses the new design imperatives of multi-million-gate SOCs built on sub-0.25 micron micron: see micrometer.

process technologies. Unlike existing tools, Dolphin's In One Pass(TM) architecture with unique and patented Global Design Technology(TM) and Continuous Model Refinement(TM) approach solves the complex interdependencies among SOC design factors by simultaneously exploring all aspects of physical design space, including placement, routing, timing, logic optimization Logic optimization a part of logic synthesis, is the process of finding an equivalent representation of the specificied logic circuit under one or more specified constraint. Generally the circuit is constrained to minimum chip area meeting a prespecified delay. , clock, power, and cross talk. Dolphin has been proven to provide the benefits of In One Pass by providing the best turn-around time while improving the performance of over 30 multi-million gate chips and IP blocks ranging from 0.25 to 0.15 micron and operating at frequencies from 50 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  to over 250MHz.
