Changes at Maine's Sunday River ski area

Maine's Sunday River ski resort said it is spending $4.8 million to expand snowmaking capacity, install a new "magic carpet lift" on its beginner slope, refurbish its lodgings and upgrade other facilities.

The announcement came after its sister resort, Sugarloaf USA in Carrabasset Valley, detailed a $4 million program of new spending. Both resorts were purchased in August by Boyne USA, based in Michigan.

The capital investments at Sunday River and Sugarloaf are the largest in more than a decade, according to the announcements. The $4.8 million being spent at Sunday River does not include the $2.5 million earmarked for the repair of damage to resort property from flash floods in July.

More than $1.3 million is being spent on renovations to the Jordan Grand Resort Hotel, Grand Summit Resort Hotel and slopeside condominiums, while nearly $1 million will go toward expansion of the snowmaking system.

The expansion emphasizes the use of low-energy equipment that reduces the amount of compressed air needed for snowmaking.

"We already have the reputation for top quality snow, an expansive resort and a wealth of amenities, which has solidified us as a regional leader," said Dana Bullen, general manager at Sunday River. "The improvements under way for this year will further increase our snowmaking competitive edge, especially early in the season, while enhancing the overall guest experience."

The 500-foot magic carpet lift, known for its ease in accommodating beginners, is replacing the handle tow in servicing the resort's Sundance learning terrain.
