Change to screening.


Changes to the cervical screening system are being introduced for women in Northumberland and Tyne and Wear Tyne and Wear, former metropolitan county, NE England. Created in the 1974 local government reorganization, the county embraced the Newcastle upon Tyne conurbation and comprised five metropolitan districts: Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside,  in response to new research.

From January 2005, women will first be screened at 25, and will then be invited for screening at three-yearly intervals until they reach the age of 50, and then at five-yearly intervals until they are 65. A new, more accurate, test is also being introduced.

Change sought

MORE than one-third of people in Tyne and Wear would most like to change the pay packets of Premiership footballers, a new survey has revealed.

The poll commissioned by car firm Honda asked people what they would most like to change in the world. 22pc in the region want to put a stop to delays on public transport and 16pc want to see less reality TV shows.

Board meeting

A MEETING of Tynedale Council's corporate policy and management board will take place on Thursday at 6pm in the council chambers at Prospect House, Hexham, when there will be an update on plans for a new swimming pool in the town.

Extra parking

MORE car parking space could be built by a Tyneside hospital.

Conmen alert

ELDERLY people are being invited to a free talk about the danger of conmen.

The talk, by South Tyneside South Tyneside is a metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear in North East England.

It is bordered by four other boroughs - Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead to the west, Sunderland in the south, and North Tyneside to the north.

It is a significant port. Shipbuilding and marine engineering are the main industries; chemicals and paints are manufactured. , on Friday at 2pm. It will focus on dealing with conmen who deceive people into handing over money for work that is substandard, or not done at all.

Cash appeal

AN appeal to raise pounds 20,000 has been launched to secure the future of Wylam Institute, in Northumberland. The 108-year-old building is in need of a face lift to restore its antique chimneys and for exterior re-pointing work.

Black history

A FESTIVAL of African culture is being held in Sunderland to celebrate Black History Month. The free event will involve arts workshops including banner making and art group sessions for various age groups, and an animal crafts and story-telling session.
