Change in the Making.Denise Lloyd is living proof that the independent agent work force is becoming increasingly diverse. Lloyd, owner of D.H. Lloyd & Associates, a Washington-based agency specializing in commercial lines, is a black woman. Lloyd has witnessed the changes in independent agencies in the 15 years since she started her firm. More agencies are run by women and minorities than ever before, because standard company contracts are now more accessible to these groups, she said. Lloyd said this has more to do with the increasing minority populations than corporate social consciousness. "I'm I'm Contraction of I am. Our Living Language Speakers of some scattered varieties of American English sometimes use I'm instead of I've or I have in present perfect constructions, as in not really concerned with the cause of it, so long as it happens," she said. And although 81% of agencies are owned by non-Hispanic whites, 6% are now owned by Latinos/Hispanics, 4% by Asian-Americans and 3% by African-Americans. Those are not the only changes Lloyd has seen. She said agents now must earn college degrees and professional certificates to succeed. And, Lloyd said, today's agencies offer more than just insurance quotes.
