Change in the Making.

Denise Lloyd is living proof that the independent agent work force is becoming increasingly diverse. Lloyd, owner of D.H. Lloyd & Associates, a Washington-based agency specializing in commercial lines, is a black woman.

Lloyd has witnessed the changes in independent agencies in the 15 years since she started her firm. More agencies are run by women and minorities than ever before, because standard company contracts are now more accessible to these groups, she said. Lloyd said this has more to do with the increasing minority populations than corporate social consciousness.

"I'm I'm

Contraction of I am.

Our Living Language Speakers of some scattered varieties of American English sometimes use I'm instead of I've or I have in present perfect constructions, as in
not really concerned with the cause of it, so long as it happens," she said.

Founded in the late 17th cent. by a group of merchants, shipowners, and insurance brokers at the coffeehouse of Edward Lloyd, the association is now  observations. Today's independent agency is larger, more sophisticated and more technologically savvy than ever, and its owners are younger and more likely to be women or minorities, according to according to

the 2000 Agency Universe Study (see "The Changing Face of the Independent Agency," page 32). Agency ownership by women has increased 25% since the last Agency Universe study, released in 1996. And although 81% of agencies are owned by non-Hispanic whites, 6% are now owned by Latinos/Hispanics, 4% by Asian-Americans and 3% by African-Americans.

Those are not the only changes Lloyd has seen. She said agents now must earn college degrees and professional certificates to succeed. And, Lloyd said, today's agencies offer more than just insurance quotes. "I think that we've we've

Lloyd, who is chairwoman of the National African-American Insurance Association, said minority and female insurance professionals have made great strides, but still have a long way to go.

"The insurance industry is probably one of the last areas to reflect the community at large," she said.
