Change can be better than a rest; Tim Easterby Stable Tour.Change of seasons, change of code. It comes naturally to Tim Easterby who, after another memorably successful Flat campaign, is now switching his attentions to the jumps, habitually HABITUALLY. In a way or to an extent that is well known: "his famously neurotic mannerisms [are] lampooned in the novels of Evelyn Waugh" adopted by his father, Peter, who remains the only trainer to have turned out 1,000-plus winners under both sets of rules. "I have no real preference between the two," says Easterby, "I love the Flat horses, and the two-year-olds. But I also get a great thrill out of training the jumpers." Last season, that thrill was taken to new heights. Easterby saddled his first winner at the Cheltenham Festival The Cheltenham Festival is the most prestigious meeting in the National Hunt racing calendar in the United Kingdom and has race prize money second only to the Grand National. - where his father had won five Champion Hurdles The Champion Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt horse race in the United Kingdom for four-year-old and above horses. "We'll take another look at Simply Gifted in a month's time, but, like Barton, we'll probably give him the year off. He's a very good horse and he'll jump a fence one day," says Easterby. Fences could well beckon beck·on v. beck·oned, beck·on·ing, beck·ons v.tr. 1. "The main thing is to get him right," he stresses. "He'll have his tendons doctored shortly - we're going to inject in·ject v. 1. "Because he didn't break down, and we stopped as soon as we got a warning, there's no reason why he shouldn't make a full recovery," insists Easterby, who is nothing if not philosophical about the setback. "These things happen and there's nothing you can do about them. It's disappointing, and I suppose we have to be grateful that it didn't happen this time last year." Dwelling on what might have been, had Barton and Simply Gifted been in rude health this season, is not the Easterby style. Although his jumping string, as usual, makes up only about 30 per cent of his yard, he remains a man to be feared throughout the winter months when his careful placing, plus his inherent ability not to mistake his geese geese domestic geese which were derived from the wild goose Anser anser. Noun 1. in the weeks and months ahead. Barnburgh Boy 5 g Shalford-Tuxford Hideaway He's been in Ireland for some summer jumping, but I don't think it has worked out that well, and he'll be coming back to race for us this winter. He had a good season last year over fences, which suited him as he didn't seem to get the trip over hurdles. He should make a good little two-mile chaser. Boogy Woogy 3 g Rock Hopper-Primulette There is a strong possibility this horse will go hurdling. We schooled him the other morning and he jumps well. He likes soft ground and he gets the trip well, which has surprised me. I was completely wrong about him, as I thought a mile, maybe a mile-and-a-quarter, suited him best, but I think now he'd get any trip. He's got some ability, but he doesn't want to be in front too long. I wouldn't think you'd want to be going to the last flight 20 lengths clear on him! Clune Burne 4 g Germont-Bally Mayo This horse came off an island somewhere off the Scottish coast and was bought for the owners by Harry Bell. He's never seen a racecourse - I don't think he'd ever seen a man when he first came! - but he's shaping well and jumps well. I just hope he is some good because he has such a great attitude. Whether I set him off in bumpers, I don't really know. I don't like bumpers - if you win them you get nowt nowt Noun N English dialect nothing [from naught] - and I often think they are a waste of a run. So this fellow could go straight over hurdles. Cumbrian Challenge 10 g Be My Native-Sixpenny If only all horses had as big a heart as this one. As usual, he did tremendously well again during the summer and I was happy enough with his first run at Wetherby last week. As everyone knows, he loves the Yorkshire track and, no matter what weight he gets, we'll aim again at the Castleford Chase The Castleford Chase is a National Hunt handicap chase in the United Kingdom for five-year-old and above horses. It is run over a distance of 2 miles (3,219 metres) at Wetherby Racecourse in December. There are twelve fences to be jumped in the race. , which he won last year after finishing fourth on the course two days before. I don't really know what happened with him the first time, he never ran a race. But he came back bouncing so we ran him again and tried him in a tongue-strap, which seemed to help him. He's been a tremendous horse for us. Cumbrian Maestro (1) (Maestro NT) An earlier name for scheduling software for Windows NT from Tivoli Systems, Inc. When IBM acquired Tivoli in 1996, the program was renamed IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler. 6 g Puissance-Flicker Toa Flame He was off with a sprained tendon sprained tendon see bowed tendon, tendon strain. last season, but he's back in work now and will be running at Christmas-time in novice chases. He's not top-class, but there is every chance that he could be a better horse over fences than he was over hurdles. Dunraven 4 g Perpendicular-Politique I bought this horse at the May Sales at Doncaster and Steve Hammond, who owns Simply Dashing, also owns this chap. He has plenty about him and should run this side of Christmas. We could give him a run in a bumper, but there's a chance he'll go straight over hurdles. He's coming on nicely. Durham Dandy 3 g Inchinor-Disco Girl He shaped all right one day on the Flat at Carlisle, but he is a weak, unfurnished unfurnished Adjective not containing any furniture Adj. 1. unfurnished - not equipped with what is needed especially furniture; "an unfurnished apartment" sort of horse. I thought he ran okay at Hexham over hurdles the other day and he should win for us. He jumps like a buck and he will be a staying chaser one day. Jackson Park Jackson Park refers to one of the following locations in the United States:
6 g Domynsky-Hysteria He had a bit of a problem last year, but is fine again now. He wasn't a bad little horse as a four-year-old, but he's just lost it a bit since then, though to be fair he's never really had a fair crack at it. He's a very game horse will be sent over fences. He could make the grade. Justice Prevailed 5 g Sula Bula-Enchanted Cross This is a horse I like. He shaped very well last season and showed us a fair bit at home. He ran a good race to finish fourth in a bumper first time out at Newcastle, but in two later efforts he ran terribly and I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed) "Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party. why. He lost a lot of weight, and it was difficult to keep any condition on him. But that was his first year in training and I think he'll be a different horse this time. He's a real nice individual and he'll be going hurdling. Just Tom 4 g Primitive Rising-Edenburt Micky Hammond trained this horse last year, and I bought him privately from the owner-breeder some time after I'd originally seen him at the sales, when he was led out unsold. He's a real nice type, by a sire I like, and he is a chaser in the making. Killernan Kilmaine 4 g Sure Blade-Piedras This looks a nice horse. Alan Bailey had him last season and then he got a tendon. He's been fired, so we'll just have to hope he stands up to training, but I like him and we'll aim to run him over hurdles. Minivet Min´i`vet n. 1. (Zool.) A singing bird of India of the family 4 g Midyan-Bronzewing He came to us after finishing second in a claimer at York earlier in the month. He's not a bad horse - he's rated 87 on the Flat - and the plan is to go hurdling with him. He's not a big, strong horse, but he loves soft ground, so the first job is to get him schooled-up. He could be all right. Mixsterthetrixster 3 g Alleged-Parliament House He's a very good horse, who hates starting stalls; as soon as he sees them, he worries and sweats. So I decided with Martyn Burke Martyn Burke (born 1947) is a journalist, screenwriter and novelist from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His career got started when he began writing and directing documentaries for CBC Television. , his owner, to send him hurdling. He could be quite good so long as he settles to it, because he's a 'buzzy' horse. Unfortunately, he only got as far as the third flight on his debut at Wetherby last week before unseating poor Lorcan [Wyer], but that was just one of those things. The horse has come back sound, but where he'll go next, I don't know. There aren't too many three-year-old hurdles around at the moment, but he'll run again once an opportunity arises. Monarch's Pursuit 5 g Pursuit Of Love-Last Detail He was a useful novice over hurdles two seasons ago, but he only ran once last season at Wetherby, and came back sore, so we left him off. He's rated 130 over hurdles, so he's going to go novice chasing this time. He jumps fences very well and could make a real good chaser. A horse to follow, I think. Nicodemus 5 g St Ninian-Qurrat Al Ain This article is about the city in the United Arab Emirates. For the city in Lebanon, see El Ain. Al Ain (Arabic: العين He's a half-brother to Simply Dashing, but not a big horse. He showed ability last season, but we could never really get him right. He seems okay now and will run in novice handicap hurdles. Panama House 4 g Rudimentary-Lustrous He ran only twice over hurdles last season, but there was nothing wrong with him, it was just that the ground went against him. He does handle a bit of cut, but he's basically a fast-ground horse, and he does like jumping. I fancied him to run well at Wetherby last week, and I think he would have done, only he went off a bit too fast in front. We'll drop him in next time he runs. I think we'll have a bit of fun with him this winter. Royal Tipple 3 g Noble Patriarch-Mashin Time He hasn't had much racing on the Flat, but, for some reason, is rated 67, whereas I believe he should be rated about 50; I don't know where the handicappers get some of these ratings from sometimes. He could be all right over hurdles, though. We've schooled him and he jumps well. Rye Crossing 9 g Over The River-Aran Tour He just wasn't right last season so we gave him a year out, and he did some hunting. He has come back in good fettle fet·tle n. 1. Proper or sound condition. 2. Mental or emotional state; spirits. and could improve for keeping. He ran really well to finish second in a handicap chase at Wetherby last week, when Tony McCoy For the football player of the same name see Tony McCoy (football player). Anthony Peter "AP" McCoy MBE (born 4 May 1974, Moneyglass, County Antrim, Northern Ireland) is a Northern Irish horse racing jockey, and is widely regarded as the greatest jump jockey to date. gave him a great ride, and we will stick to those sorts of race over three miles. He was fairly fit at Wetherby, despite his long absence from the course, but I would expect him to improve a bit for the race. He goes on any ground and should be all right. Scottie York 3 g Noble Patriarch-Devon Dancer A very good-looking horse, who has run satisfactorily on the Flat. What he wants is a big fellow on him, who can catch hold of him, because he's been very, very green. Tony McCoy rode him at Wetherby last week on his jumping debut, when he shaped all right. Racing will improve him. He'll be better later in the season and could make up into a nice horse one day. Scotch Saint 4 g St Ninian-Qurrat Al Ain He's a half-brother to Simply Dashing. A giant of a horse and a great mover mover /mov·er/ (moo´ver) that which produces motion. prime mover a muscle that acts directly to bring about a desired movement. , he could run in a bumper or two and then be put away until next season; it depends on how he shapes really. He won't be rushed. Scotton Green 8 g Ardross-Grange Hill Girl A lovely horse and a good jumper, who stays well. We just might have over-faced him taking him to Cheltenham for the Kim Muir last term, in which he finished sixth; it just bottomed him and after that he didn't show his true form. But he'd run some cracking races up until then, and he is a very game and genuine horse. Staying is his game, and he should go on this season. Share Options 8 g Executive Perk-Shannon Belle He has just come back into work and will be running around Christmas-time. He's done very well through the summer and I think he could develop into a good staying chaser. He might even make up into a Grand National horse one day. He doesn't seem to mind good ground or soft. He's a very genuine horse, who puts a lot into his races and, for that reason perhaps, wouldn't stand too many quick races. Silly Money 8 g Silly Prices-Playagain He was unlucky not to win a novice chase at Wetherby last autumn. He fell three out when he was disputing the lead and he lost his confidence over fences after that. He's not a bad horse and I was pleased enough with his first run of the season over hurdles at Wetherby last week. He'll continue to run in handicap hurdles for a while, but, if he's not as good as the handicapper hand·i·cap·per n. Sports & Games 1. One who assigns handicaps. 2. One who predicts the winners in a horserace, especially one who publishes such predictions as a guide for bettors. Noun 1. thinks he is, he'll have to go into claimers. Alternatively, if we felt he had his confidence back, he could return to chasing. Simple Tonic 4 g Simply Great-Buck Up He is a horse we bred ourselves, and one who should be okay. He goes well at home, but we didn't run him over hurdles last season because we didn't want to spoil spoil v. spoiled or spoilt , spoil·ing, spoils v.tr. 1. a. To impair the value or quality of. b. To damage irreparably; ruin. 2. him as we felt he'd make a nice novice four-year-old. Instead we ran him in a couple of bumpers, one of which he won at Sedgefield in February. He's in good fettle and will run shortly. Simply Dashing 8 g Simply Great-Qurrat Al Ain He's in great fettle, tremendous form. We won't get tempted to go to Cheltenham this season for the Gold Cup, as we did last. I regretted that, because although he does get three miles, he struggles a bit in top-class company. His ideal trip is two and a half miles on fast ground - and, if you could give him another breathing system, he'd be the best horse in Britain. We'll run in the Charlie Hall Chase The Charlie Hall Chase is a Grade 2 National Hunt steeplechase for five-year-old and above horses. It is run over a distance of 3 miles 1 furlongs (5,029 metres) at Wetherby Racecourse in late October or early November. There are eighteen fences to be jumped in the race. at Wetherby on Saturday week - we have no option really, he is rated 162 and there is nowhere else to go - and he'll probably run in the two big handicaps at Cheltenham, the Murphy's and the Tripleprint; he finished second in both of them last season. If he's still in good form in the spring, he would be trained with Aintree's Grade 1 Martell Chase over two and a half miles in mind. Skillwise 7 g Buckley-Calametta A lovely horse, who jumps fences well, and will be running very soon in a novice chase. He was very unfortunate last season as he had only one run, at Carlisle, where he was jumped into and came back with a big hole in the side of his hock hock: see wine. . It took five months to get it right, though it looked like we would have to put him down at one stage. He is a horse I've always liked; he had the speed to win over hurdles, even though he is a big, strapping strap·ping adj. Having a sturdy muscular physique; robust. n. 1. Straps considered as a group. 2. Material for making straps. horse who wants three miles and fences. I entered him in the May sale at Doncaster, but then I got to like him that much I decided not to sell him. He is shaping up nicely and will probably run in a bumper at Market Rasen on Saturday.
