Chance to have a say on 999 Trust.THE North East Ambulance Service The North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust is the authority responsible for providing NHS ambulance services in North East England, covering the counties of County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear and the boroughs of Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and has launched a three-month consultation on its application to become an NHS Foundation Trust NHS Foundation Trusts (often referred to as "foundation hospitals") are hospitals which are part of the National Health Service in England. Function They have a significant amount of managerial and financial freedom when compared to existing NHS Trust. . Foundation Trust status gives an organisation more control over its finances and enables local people to have a greater say. Both of Teesside's hospital trusts have already become Foundation Trusts. NHS Foundation Trusts: Are free from government control. Can retain any surpluses they generate to invest in new services, and can borrow money to support these investments. Are accountable to their local communities as local people can become members and governors. Chief Executive Simon Featherstone said: "We believe that becoming a Foundation Trust will provide real benefits to our patients, our staff and our service partners." Former Health Secretary and Darlington MP Alan Milburn said: "We're very lucky in the North-east because we already have one of the very best ambulance services in the country." Mike Dalton, former chairman of the Patient and Public Involvement Forum, said: "As a Foundation Trust, there will be a far greater emphasis on working with patients and the public to make sure that the best care is delivered."
