Chance to go batty on walk.

BAT fans are being given the chance to see the shadowy creatures in their natural habitat near Sutton Cold field.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a British charitable organisation which works to promote conservation and protection of birds and the wider environment through public awareness campaigns, petitions and through the operation of nature reserves  team at Middleton Lakes reserve are holding a evening bat walk on August 31, from 8pm to 10pm.

Bat detectors will allow the calls of the different species to be heard and compared, and there will be plenty of opportunities to see them fly too.

There are about 1,100 species of bat worldwide, but only 17 are found in Britain.

Those most likely to be encountered at Middleton Lakes are the common pipistrelle and Daubenton's bat, though the brown long-eared and noctule noc·tule  
n.
A large, reddish-brown insectivorous bat of the genus Nyctalus, found in Eurasia, Indonesia, and the Philippines and typically dwelling in the hollows of trees.
 bats also pass by occasionally.

There are two short family wild life walks scheduled for this Thursday, and on August 25. Both will be held between 11am and 1pm. Call 01827 259454 to reserve a place. There is a charge of pounds 1 for RSPB members and pounds 2 for non-members.
