Chance of a fine romance.

Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson, Eileen Atkins Plot: Harvey Shine (Hoffman) writes advertising jingles. He's flying to London for his daughter's wedding but plans to miss the reception to get back to New York for a vital meeting.

He feels pushed out of the celebrations by his ex-wife's husband and is hurt when his daughter asks her step-father, rather than Harvey, to give her away. Meanwhile Kate Walker (Thompson) is a lonely National Statistics worker, asking questions of travellers as they pass through Heathrow. She goes on a disastrous blind date with Patrick Baladi and has to fend off constant phone calls from her mother (Atkins) who her friends describe as "human contraception".

When he misses his flight home, Harvey and Kate meet in last chance harvey ( 12a) an airport bar and get talking.

She persuades him to go back to the wedding and a tentative romance begins.

Good points: Last Chance Harvey is a grown-up movie, featuring moving performances and a clever, funny script. It's the film Richard Curtis should have made instead of The Boat That Rocked.

It's hard to believe Hoffman is nearly 72, as he has the charisma of a much younger man..

We can just about buy a relationship with Thompson, 22 years his junior.

Bad points: At times it's a bit too twee, such as the improbable way Kate greets all her work colleagues with a kiss every morning. In another minor point, the timescale of the day doesn't add up.

Should I see it?: Absolutely, especially if you're an older cinema-goer fed up of fatuous films targeted only at teenagers..
