Champions of Hope Invited to Participate in the White House's Youth

Service Compact

Champions of Hope, a non-profit organization A non-profit organization (abbreviated "NPO", also "non-profit" or "not-for-profit") is a legally constituted organization whose primary objective is to support or to actively engage in activities of public or private interest without any commercial or monetary profit purposes.  committed to helping young people respond to personal, community, and global challenges, today announced an unprecedented success from its marketing efforts for the 2002 United Day of Service.

Using a digital campaign developed through a partnership with Avalon Digital Marketing Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:AVLN AVLN Automatic Vehicle Location and Navigation ), the United Day of Service achieved response and participation rates much greater than projected.

"Avalon provided us with outstanding creative services Creative Services are a subsector of the creative industries, a part of the economy that creates wealth by offering creativity for hire to other businesses. Examples include:

, a series of compelling, motivational messages, and an on-target delivery strategy that typically falls well beyond the imagination and budgets of non-profit organizations," said Melissa Helmbrecht, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "They gave us an opportunity to reach the right people, motivate them to act, and track their action. That is the real challenge of social movement communications, and Avalon pulled it off better than any company that we've ever run across."

"Champions of Hope marketed the United Day of Service in a way that had never been tried before," said Jeanniey Mullen, Avalon's chief marketing officer.

"Their vision -- using the Internet as a marketing medium in a manner that relates to young people -- was very compelling. Our strategic and creative services, coupled with our messaging and tracking software, helped mobilize youth throughout the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  and around the world to participate in this worthy cause."

United Day of Service

Champions of Hope launched a campaign to mobilize young people worldwide to unite in service to their communities on the one-year anniversary of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Realizing that traditional non-profit marketing strategies may not be the best way to reach the youth of America, Champions of Hope launched a search for a partner that offered the expertise and creative vision to reach this critical audience in an entirely digital format. Avalon quickly set itself apart from the competition and was selected to work with Champions of Hope in the summer of 2002.

"We had a very tight timeframe for a project of this magnitude," said Chris Plunkett, Avalon's senior vice president of corporate development. "We delivered five media-rich, motivational e-mail marketing Email marketing is a form of direct marketing which uses electronic mail as a means of communicating commercial or fundraising messages to an audience. "We found that a vast majority of our audience viewed our message, and in many cases passed it on," said Helmbrecht. "By driving recipients to our Web site for registration and additional information, we created an internal feedback loop that allowed us to track activity and fine-tune future communications tailored to an individual's specific interests.

"The end result was that thousands of young people worldwide were able to make a difference on the United Day of Service. And, we were able to include youth otherwise unreachable in countries like Bosnia and Turkey."

A Long-Term Partnership

Because of the unprecedented success of the digital marketing campaign for the United Day of Service, Champions of Hope has been invited to participate in the Youth Service Compact, a committee comprised of the top non-profit groups in the country that convened at the White House in October 2002 to design a strategy to increase the impact of youth services organizations.

The Avalon/Champions of Hope partnership and the United Day of Service campaign can serve as the model of how an organization can harness digital technology to achieve its objectives.

Additionally, Champions of Hope announced that it has engaged Avalon Digital Marketing Systems as its marketing partner-of-choice for all future campaigns. "We are very pleased with the success of this campaign and look forward to many more successful collaborations in the future," said Mullen.
