FOUR teenage sensations ensured Wirral Premier table tennis club enjoyed a spectacular finish to the season by winning the national cadet championships. Sophie Byron and Jordyn Layfield, both 13,Hayley Parker,14,and 15 year -oldJonathon Taylor, all helped by team captain Pat Newns, beat Staveley in the grand final - the first time the club has taken the title. The Wirral club's head coach Les Jones Les Jones (born July 19, 1948 in St Helens) was an English rugby league player for the St Helens club in the English Rugby League Championship competition. His position of choice was at wing. said the team had exceeded expectations. ``We were thinking we would be happy with a semi- final place at best, but the players at this club seem to have a habit of winning the big games and they have done it again,''he added. ``The team were all delighted with their success, but more telling than that was our opponents were pleased to have been beaten by us. ``There were no niggles because our players behaved themselves and played the game in the right way, which the other teams recognised and appreciated. ``That is a tribute to the players and to Pat Newns for all the work and the lead she gave throughout the season.'' Wirral Premier had qualified for the national finals, held at Burntwood in Essex,by winning the North West League with a 100 per cent record-- played 21, won 21. In the finals league stage, they beat Malvern 6-0,London Progress 5- 1 and Chesham High School Chesham High School is a grammar school on White Hill, Chesham, Buckinghamshire. They then drew the sting of Rotherham Scorpions 4-2 and went on to win by the same score against Staveley. Les added: ``The team were up against some really top level players right through the competition, from all across the country. ``It was also something of a novelty Novelty is the quality of being new. Although it may be said to have an objective dimension (e.g. a new style of art coming into being, such as abstract art or impressionism) it essentially exists in the subjective perceptions of individuals. because our team had three girls and one boy, whereas the other sides were all boys. I think our girls felt they had to show the lads just how well they could play, and they did.'' Les continued: ``It was also an impressive achievement because the cadet age limit is 15 and out of our team, only Jon was 15and the three girls were 13 and14. ``They really held their own against older players and that makes the victory all the better.'' But the teenagers were not allowed to bask in glory for too long as it is exam time in Wirral's schools. ``They have done well, but now their table tennis has to take a back seat in favour of exams, and rightly so,'' saidLes. ``They can get their heads down heads down - [Sun] Concentrating, usually so heavily and for so long that everything outside the focus area is missed.
