 winning oarsmen have returned to their NorthWales training base for the first time in half a century.

, Keith Shackell and Roger Pope won the coxless fours race at the British Empire British Empire, overseas territories linked to Great Britain in a variety of constitutional relationships, established over a period of three centuries. The establishment of the empire resulted primarily from commercial and political motives and emigration movements  Games - these days of course known as the Commonwealth Games Commonwealth games, series of amateur athletic meets held among citizens of countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. Originated (1930) as the British Empire games, the series is held every four years and is patterned after the Olympic games; women have participated  - when they were held in Cardiff in July 1958.

They trained on Llyn Padarn, Llanberis, and yesterday returned to the village for a reunion 50 years to the day after their triumph.

They were joined by Mike Evans, the team reserve, and coach Mike Varese who had travelled from West Palm Beach, Florida West Palm Beach, also known as West Palm, is the most populous city in Palm Beach County, Florida, USA. The city is also the oldest incorporated municipality in South Florida. According to the University of Florida's 2006 estimates, the city had a population of 107,617. , to be at the reunion.

During their visit they were given a VIP tour of the Llanberis Mountain Railway which included a trip up Snowdon, which they had not done together since their last visit.

 Rowing Club and it was the first time they had won international honours.

"We are really happy to be back in Llanberis to celebrate our win. It is still a beautiful place," he said.

The men are all now in their 70s but they are still in good health and hope to return to North Wales to celebrate the 60th anniversary.
