Champion International Corporation Completes Sale of Deferiet Mill to The Deferiet Paper Company.

:CHA) announced today that it has completed the sale of its groundwood specialty mill in Deferiet, New York Deferiet is a village in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 309 at the 2000 census. The village is named after settler Jenika de Ferriet.

The Village of Deferiet is at the southwestern side of the Town of Wilna and is east of Watertown.

The Deferiet mill is located in Jefferson County, New York Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2000 census, the population was 111,738. It is named after Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States of America. Its county seat is Watertown. . The mill currently produces approximately 225,000 tons per year of coated groundwood, uncoated groundwood, supercalendered, and coated freesheet specialty papers for the publishing and wholesale distribution industry.

In October of 1997, Champion announced its intention to divest several non-strategic product segments and facilities, including the Deferiet mill, as part of a three-pronged strategy to maximize total shareholder return by focusing on strategic businesses, increasing productivity, and improving financial discipline. The company sold its newsprint business and Texas recycling centers to Donohue, Inc. in June, 1998, and its ovenable-board business to Tenneco, Inc. in September, 1998. Last month, the company sold the Canton, North Carolina Canton is a town in Haywood County, North Carolina, United States. It is located about 13 miles west of Asheville, North Carolina. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E).  to The Conservation Fund. The sale to The Conservation Fund is expected to close during the second quarter.
