Champagne taste test sees store brands sparkle.

Christmas revellers will not need to splash the cash on expensive champagne this year after supermarket own brands performed well in a taste test for a leading consumer guide.

However, the rather pricier Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Champagne Brut Brut, Brute (both: brt), or Brutus (br  NV, selling at Au31.91 a bottle, still came out on top among the 14 champagnes tested.

Sainsbury's Blanc de Noirs Blanc de noirs is a French term (literally "white of blacks") for a white wine produced entirely from black grapes. It is often encountered in Champagne, where a number of houses have followed the lead of Bollinger's prestige cuvĂ©e  Champagne Brut NV was only 1 per cent behind, though, on 89 per cent and around half the price at Au15.98.

However, Moet and Chandon Brut NV did not score well, coming 13th out of the 14. The experts were not impressed by its "slightly medicinal" aroma or "aggressive acidity".

Martyn Hocking, editor of Which? magazine, said: "With the party season ahead of us it's great to know that you don't need to spend a fortune to get a good quality champagne. Sainsbury's own brand is a corker."
