Champ Matteo aims to avenge his Ailsa agony.

AMATEUR champion Matteo Manassero can't wait to tee off at Turnberry in next month's Open - a year after he took a battering there.

The 16-year-old lifted the unpaid game's biggest prize when he dumped Sam Hutsby of Hampshire 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final at the weekend.

Now the youngster is looking forward to taming the Ailsa course in July. He said: "I played there in last year's Amateur Championship and shot a 14over 84 in qualifying.

"Now I am going back there for the Open and hopefully I'll be ready for it this time."

All-square after 15 holes of the morning round, the Italian had a hole-winning par at 16 before ramming in birdies at 17 and 18 to move three ahead.

He pushed himself to the brink of glory when he went six up with just six to play in the afternoon and despite Hutsby having birdies at the 31st and 32nd, a half at the next gave the youngster a famous win.

Portugal's Jose-Filipe Lima finished second on seven under after a three-under 68.

Steven O'Hara was top Scot in joint 10th place after a final round 69 left him on 283.

= Lisa Maguire, one half of the 14-year-old Irish twins, birdied the seventh extra hole of a sudden-death play-off to win the 3 Irish Women's Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Cork.

The youngster, who had a final-round 75, beat England's Hannah Burke (73) after they tied on five-under par 214 after three rounds.

Scotland's Jane Turner (Craigielaw) shot a final-day 75 to finish third on 219 while Bothwell Castle's Pamela Pretswell (75) was 10th on 224.

Carly Booth (Comrie), had a 73 for 225 and joint 11th place and Alford's Laura Murray (78) was joint 15th on 228.
