The 16-year-old lifted the unpaid game's biggest prize when he dumped Sam Hutsby of Hampshire 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final at the weekend.

Now the youngster is looking forward to taming the Ailsa course in July. He said: "I played there in last year's Amateur Championship and shot a 14over 84 in qualifying.

"Now I am going back there for the Open and hopefully I'll be ready for it this time."

All-square after 15 holes of the morning round, the Italian had a hole-winning par at 16 before ramming in birdies at 17 and 18 to move three ahead.

He pushed himself to the brink of glory when he went six up with just six to play in the afternoon and despite Hutsby having birdies at the 31st and 32nd, a half at the next gave the youngster a famous win.
