Chameleon Reports Axis Reduces Network Processor Verification Time.

Business Editors and High Tech Writers

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 14, 2000

Xcite (TM)Reduces Total Verification Time By 60% With Simulation

Speedup of over 400 Times Over Software Simulator

Axis Systems, Inc. (Axis), a supplier of the fastest electronic design automation (EDA (1) (Electronic Design Automation) Using the computer to design, lay out, verify and simulate the performance of electronic circuits on a chip or printed circuit board. ) simulation acceleration solutions, announced today that Chameleon chameleon (kəmē`lēən, –mēl`yən), small- to medium-sized lizard of the family Chamaeleonidae. About eighty species are found in sub-Saharan Africa, with a few in S Asia.  Systems, Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA) has adopted Axis' verification system, Xcite within their verification flow to accelerate functional verification Functional verification, in electronic design automation, is the task of verifying that the logic design conforms to specification. In everyday terms, functional verification attempts to answer the question "Does this proposed design do what is intended?" This is a complex task,  of Chameleon's reconfigurable communications processor targeted to networking applications.

Chameleon is using the full-capacity, 10-million gate version of Xcite-2000 to save verification time during the development cycle of its reconfigurable communications processor.

Michael Raam, VP of Hardware Engineering at Chameleon (Sunnyvale, CA),"With our aggressive design complexity as well as short time to market pressures, we needed a high performance verification system, which not only is easy to use but also provides advanced debugging capabilities to easily isolate design problems. We have been using Xcite-2000 since last year and have found that it cuts our verification time by 60% and gave us tremendous simulation acceleration. Axis Xcite verification system has resulted in savings many times over its initial investment."

"Chameleon is on the leading edge of system design," said Steve Wang, VP of Marketing at Axis. "Their design methodology requires a highly efficient verification flow. For Chameleon to adopt Axis Xcite verification system within their methodology demonstrates Axis' leadership in design verification. We are happy to be part of their success."

Beyond accelerating verification of hardware functionality, Chameleon is using Xcite system to run software applications on the hardware design before chip tape-out. This allows software development much earlier in the design cycle thus further reducing the product development time.

About the fast simulation acceleration of Xcite

Xcite represents of a new class of design verification tools that take advantage of reconfigurable computing See adaptive computing.  (RCC RCC - An extensible language. ) co-processors coupled with functional verification and debugging software to improve design simulation, verification and debugging throughput of 100 to 1000 times over software only simulation approach. Xcite addresses behavioral, RTL (Register Transfer Level) A high-level hardware description language (HDL) for defining digital circuits. The circuits are described as a collection of registers, Boolean equations, control logic such as "if-then-else" statements as well as complex event sequences;  and gate-level simulation and verification for designs of up to 10 million-gates. Xcite fits directly inside or along side a Sun(TM) Microsystems Ultra 60 workstation and connects to its PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

(2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus).
backplane An interconnecting device that has sockets for printed circuit boards to plug into.

Passive and Active
Although resistors may be used, a "passive" backplane adds no processing in the circuit.

About Chameleon

Chameleon Systems, Inc. is a privately held fabless semiconductor company A fabless semiconductor company specializes in the design and sale of hardware devices implemented on semiconductor chips. It achieves an advantage by outsourcing the fabrication of the devices to a specialized semiconductor manufacturer called a semiconductor foundry or "fab.  that designs, markets and sells reconfigurable system-on-a-chip solutions for the communications electronics markets. Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California Sunnyvale ([sʌniveil]) is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. It is one of the major cities that make up the Silicon Valley. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 131,760. , the company is developing the industry's first reconfigurable communications processor--an ideal solution for data-intensive, high-performance embedded telecom and datacom applications. The Chameleon solution allows data and telecom equipment vendors to create their own customized communications processors and more quickly adapt to new requirements and standards, reduce time-to-market, lower development costs and reduce risk. www.chameleonsystems.com
