Chambers of commerce: ranked by 2006 budget.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY THE Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce remained the largest of the more than 70 local chambers headquartered in L.A. County. Overall, the 25 largest chambers have a cumulative budget of $28.6 million for the 2007 fiscal year, up $2 million or 7 percent compared with the previous year. The chambers host a variety of events for businesses as well as the broader local community. Many chambers hold economic summits, business expos, mixers and luncheons for members. Some chambers plan unique events to their neighborhood and oversee tourism sites in their communities that draw thousands of tourists a year. The Pasadena Chamber of Commerce hosts a Tournament of Roses President's Breakfast, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce administers the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau hosts an annual lobster festival. Businesses pay a membership tee to join chambers ranging from $160 and up depending upon the number of employees at the company. The average minimum membership fee for chambers listed is $300. Cumulative membership exceeds 17,500 businesses. THE PACESETTER LOS ANGELES AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE THE largest chamber in L.A. County saw its budget grow to $6.4 million in 2007, up 21 percent over the previous year. And with revenue from membership and other sources growing, the chamber is predicting that its budget will be bigger in 2008. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] However, chamber Chief Executive Gary Toebben said that the basis of that growth, a healthy economy, is threatened unless the region improves its sickly transportation system. The chamber considers the regional network of airports a priority issue and wants to see LAX modernized while growing Ontario and Palmdale airports. "The renovation of LAX is crucial to our city," said Toebben. "We need to be able to handle the larger jumbo jets that are starting to go into use." The chamber also supports an expansion of the ports' capacity even as greenhouse gas emissions are reduced. Toebben said that the chamber is constantly approached by delegations from other countries on how to expand international trade. Globalization and trade with Asian countries has grown and those looking to import goods are/earning about the process from the chamber. "We are hosting delegations from other countries on a weekly basis on trade issues," said Toebben. Founded in 1888, the chamber has 1,560 members. [GRAPHICS OMITTED]
