Note: The information in this list was supplied by representatives of
the chambers themselves. Chambers are ranked by 2001 budget, 2000 budget
and members, respectively. British American business Council may have
qualified for the list but failed to submit its information on time. The
list was completed during the week of December 3, 2001. To the best of
our knowledge, this information is accurate as of press time. While
every effort is made to ensure the accuracy and thoroughness of the
list, omissions and typographical errors sometimes occur.

RELATED ARTICLE: The LIST EXECUTIVE SUMMARY THE weakened weak·en tr. & intr.v. weak·ened, weak·en·ing, weak·ens To make or become weak or weaker. weak en·er n. economy has yet to register in the budgets for local
chambers of commerce. Of the 25 largest chambers in L. A. County, 15 had
bigger budgets in 2001 than in 2000, five kept spending levels constant
and five had smaller budgets. Overall, 2001 chamber budgets were 3.5
percent larger than a year earlier. The 2002 budget picture, which will be reflected on next year's list, shapes up to be bleaker. One of the components of chamber budgets, contributions from corporate members, is likely to decrease as companies cut back on expenses. Membership fees could also take a hit if business members decide not to renew. And chambers with significant city funding could see cutbacks in those funds. The West Covina West Covina, city (1990 pop. 96,086), Los Angeles co., S Calif., in the San Gabriel valley; settled 1905, inc. 1923. Before World War II, West Covina was a small rural community where walnuts, wheat, and livestock were raised. Chamber of Commerce, which was 10th on last year's list, fell off as its budget plunged from $738,000 to $150,000. Chamber executive director Marian Mar·i·an 1 adj. 1. Of or relating to the Virgin Mary, her cult, or her theology. 2. Of or relating to Mary I of England or Mary Queen of Scots. Adj. 1. Pettee attributed the drop primarily to a $500,000 cut in the city's contribution. The L. A. Area Chamber, as usual, topped the list with its $4 billion budget. Howard Fine |
