Chamber music rocks.

Byline: Michael Booth For The Register-Guard

A cargo door across from the old freight car at the Springfield Chamber of Commerce has been pulled wide open to let in a cool summer evening breeze.

As you approach the door, the unmistakable electric guitar introduction to The Doors' classic rock song `Love me Two Times' winds up like a Muhammad Ali Muhammad Ali, pasha of Egypt

Come closer still. Ten feet from the door you swear Jim Morrison Noun 1. Jim Morrison - United States rock singer (1943-1971)

You reach the cargo door, wondering how rock stars in their mid-60s - Morrison would be 63 now - have held up over the years.

Peering inside, you see that The Doors are in surprisingly good condition - considering the ages of the people before you range from 18 to 57. But, after a quick focus of the eyes, you may see some people you recognize.

Springfield Chamber of Commerce president Dan Egan is cranking out riffs on lead guitar. Local lawyers Pat Melendy and Martin Fisher are playing drums and bass guitar, respectively. Egan's 18-year-old daughter, Kelly, is waiting for the next song, penny flute in hand.  company, is playing guitar and singing backup vocals. And Morrison is not Morrison, but a bearded lawyer named Murray Petitt.

The band, known as Mystery Train, formed three years ago, and is made up of chamber members and those they have recruited. They play mainly classic rock.

were,' Petitt said. `I said I wanted to form a garage band with chamber members. So Dan and I got together, turned the amps up real loud and decided that was fun.'

Mystery Train gained steam by recruiting other members, and played their first gig at Chamber Fest - a Chamber of Commerce event held the first day of every summer - three years ago at Roaring Rapids Pizza. At that time the band included Ran Whitehead, the former drummer of the popular '60s band The Turtles.

The band is now an Independence Day staple at Springfield's Light of Liberty Celebration; including last week, when they got the party started as the opening act.

Mystery Train also has played the Filbert filbert: see hazel.

 over the last few years.

`We'll probably do more charity events and auctions in the future,' Egan said. `As long as we're having fun and we can schedule it, we'll do it.'

Band members say scheduling gigs for busy professionals and a soon-to-be college student can be difficult. Most of the band members have spouses and children, in addition to demanding jobs.

`We send e-mail back and forth about scheduling time for rehearsal and events,' Masterson said. `It's definitely tough to get everyone together at the same time.'

A few band members still find the time to play in other bands. Masterson is also a part of a band called This and That. Band members say the reason they squeeze in time to play in Mystery Train is simple - they just love to play.

Several of Mystery Train's members have been in and out of bands since they were in their teens, when they had dreams of playing to large crowds of adoring a·dore

But Petitt says his new biggest fans are all he needs these days.

`My 10-year-old twins love to watch us play,' Petitt said. `They're always saying, `Your band rocks, Dad!' They're very forgiving critics.'
