Four concerts are scheduled this week at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. Chamber music

Today, Beall Hall

Music faculty members and guest artists will present a program of chamber music composed by UO emeritus professors Hal Owen and Victor Steinhardt at 3 p.m. today.

The program will feature the world premiere of Owen's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, played by the composer and clarinetist Michael Anderson.

The program will open with Owen's Celebration for Brass, an expansion of the fanfare he wrote for the opening of Eugene's new library.

Steinhardt will play his own "Kaleidoscope" for piano. Brian Scott will be featured in Owen's Sonatina son·a·ti·na

, and the Oregon String Quartet The Oregon String Quartet is a resident ensemble of the University of Oregon School of Music. It is made up of:
  • Kathryn Lucktenberg, violin
  • Fritz Gearhart, violin
  • Leslie Straka, viola
  • Steven Pologe, cello
 will join Steinhardt for his Piano Quartet.

The program also includes Six Character Pieces for Harpsichord, which Owen wrote for UO organ professor Barbara Baird. Flutist Nancy Andrew and saxophonist James Bunte will also perform.

Tickets are $9 at the door ($5 for students and senior citizens).

Steve Vacchi

Monday, Beall Hall

Bassoon bassoon (băsn`), double-reed woodwind instrument that plays in the bass and tenor registers. Its 8-ft (2.4-m) conical tube is bent double, the instrument thus being about 4 ft (1.  professor Steve Vacchi will perform music from Turkey, Hungary and India in a Faculty Artist Series recital at 8 p.m. Monday.

He will be accompanied by pianist Sandy Holder.

An advocate of contemporary music, Vacchi is a member of Trio 335, an oboe-bassoon-accordion group based in Germany that actively commissions new works.

Pacific Rim Gamelan gamelan

Indigenous orchestra of Java and Bali and, more generally, of Indonesia and Malaysia. A gamelan usually consists largely of gongs, xylophones, and metallophones (rows of tuned metal bars struck with a mallet). Gamelan polyphony is complex and many-voiced.
 

Tuesday, Beall Hall

The University of Oregon's Pacific Rim Gamelan, a Balinese percussion orchestra, will present an evening of premieres at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The Pacific Rim Gamelan consists of metal xylophones, gongs and drums that produce rhythms and colorful music with bell-like textures and deep resonance. Ensemble members also are composers at the UO music school. Many of the pieces will feature voices or instruments from the Euro-American tradition as well as the gamelan.

Tickets are $5 at the door ($3 for students and seniors).

Wednesday, Beall Hall

The Ukrainian a cappella choir Cantus will join the University Singers for an 8 p.m. concert.

The 22 members of Cantus will sing liturgical and folk music from the Ukraine, and the University Singers will sing American music including "New York Girls" by Kirke Mechem, "Water Night" by Eric Whitacre, "Heaven" by Andre Thomas and the spiritual "Ride On, King Jesus."

The two choirs will conclude the program by performing three Ukrainian pieces.

Tickets are $10 at the door ($8 for students and seniors).

Cantus, which is on its first U.S. tour, also will sing Sergei Rachmaninoff's Vespers vespers (vĕs`pərz) [Lat.,=evening], in the Christian Church, principal evening office. In the Roman rite, vespers have consisted since the 6th cent. of a few prayers, five psalms, a lesson, the Magnificat, and an antiphon.  with the Eugene Vocal Arts Ensemble on Friday at Central Lutheran Church.
