From the design and photography of the printed program (by Daniela Fechheimer and Kemmeo Brown) to the clearly stated lighting of Beverly Emmons; from the attentive rehearsing to the selection of subject matter, one sensed that founder and Artistic Director Diane Coburn Bruning has a sound vision of what she wants her company to project. The dancers and musicians were all chosen with individuality in mind. So were the guest choreographers, Ann Carlson and Stanton Welch. Bruning herself has grown as a choreographer. She is a romantic with a classicist's sense of form. Her premiere was Passages. The dance had a surging vitality as it challenged the seven dancers with bold, swooping turns contrasted with selections of leisurely elegance. The instrumental ensemble, consisting of a piano, percussion, violins, viola, and cello, was beautifully matched in a piece by Musical Director John Mackey John Mackey can refer to:
Stanton Welch, resident choreographer of the Australian Ballet Australian Ballet, national ballet company of Australia, founded in Melbourne in 1962; its school was established in 1964. The company drew on the tradition established (1940) by Edouard Borovansky of the Ballets Russes (see Diaghilev, S. P.). , was responsible for the other outstanding premiere, called Kisses. He is also a romantic, a fiery one. Accompanied by Debussy piano preludes interpreted by Steve Gosling, the dancers took wing, as though they were laughing through the air. Part of the vitality came from Gosling's full-blown musical interpretation. Earlier in the program, he offered the same kind of elan in Gyorgy Ligeti's L'Escalier du diable di·ab·le adj. Whose were they? What were they doing there? Suddenly they were filled by eight male feet. The dancers moved in unison through Carlson's ritual of compulsive activity, called "Four Men in Suits."
