Challenge from family political discussion leads to start of national polling service.

Unlike most families though, national polling services do not emanate from one of their "intense" discussions.

The Hoskinson family -- parents Keith, 42, and Cindy, 40; and children Tonja, 21, and Jason, 19 -- are the founders and operators of Stand Up America Inc., a nationwide survey and polling service which provides an outlet for the American people An American people may be:

 to express their opinions daily on topics of paramount concern to the public.

Founded in April 1996, through a 900 telephone number (900/AMERICA), Stand Up America seeks comments and opinions from the public on at least five major issues at a time for a 14-day period. In addition to voting, callers can voice their opinions on the topic for up to seven minutes. The results are tabulated and provided to members of Congress as well as to organizations in Washington, D.C.

 Keith Hoskinson, the concept grew out of a family discussion emanating from a television report on term limits. Despite their individual opinions, the family agreed that government officials were unresponsive to people's needs, partially because the American public had "lost their voice" or ability to be heard.

After extensive research by the children, organizational setup by the parents and the help of family finances, Stand Up America was born and began taking its first polls in June. Callers must be 18 years old. A portion of the money from each call is donated to charity. Among the nonprofit organizations receiving money to date are Feed the Children, Disabled Veterans Association and American Lung Association The American Lung Association (ALA) is a non-profit organization that "fights lung disease in all its forms, with special emphasis on asthma, tobacco control and environmental health". .
