Challenge from family political discussion leads to start of national polling service.

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 12, 1996--Like many families in America, the Hoskinson family of Las Vegas, watches television, keeps up to date on current affairs, has strong views and isn't afraid to express them.

Unlike most families though, national polling services do not emanate from one of their "intense" discussions.

The Hoskinson family -- parents Keith, 42, and Cindy, 40; and children Tonja, 21, and Jason, 19 -- are the founders and operators of Stand Up America Inc., a nationwide survey and polling service which provides an outlet for the American people to express their opinions daily on topics of paramount concern to the public.

Founded in April 1996, through a 900 telephone number (900/AMERICA), Stand Up America seeks comments and opinions from the public on at least five major issues at a time for a 14-day period. In addition to voting, callers can voice their opinions on the topic for up to seven minutes. The results are tabulated and provided to members of Congress as well as to organizations in Washington, D.C.

According to Keith Hoskinson, the concept grew out of a family discussion emanating from a television report on term limits. Despite their individual opinions, the family agreed that government officials were unresponsive to people's needs, partially because the American public had "lost their voice" or ability to be heard.

Noting that the family felt that existing polling services either were using insufficient samples or were tainted because they were paid for by special interest groups, he remarked:

"Our goal was to provide Americans with the opportunity to express their opinions through an unbiased and unfiltered source and to provide a conduit through which this `united voice' could reach government officials and make an impact and difference. We strongly believe that public opinion can and should move `mountains' for the good of all."

After extensive research by the children, organizational setup by the parents and the help of family finances, Stand Up America was born and began taking its first polls in June. Callers must be 18 years old. A portion of the money from each call is donated to charity. Among the nonprofit organizations receiving money to date are Feed the Children, Disabled Veterans Association and American Lung Association.

Keith Hoskinson reported that a wide variety of subjects have been surveyed to date which have included: abortion, Medicare, Social Security, tax cuts, illegal immigration, gun control, Bosnia, war on drugs, environment and balanced budget. The age and gender of respondents, he noted, vary according to the topic.
