Tracy Lee Stum was happily teaching the tricks of the trade -- three- dimensional chalk painting -- to young art enthusiasts at a workshop conducted by the American Center at the India Habitat Centre. Surrounded by scales, measuring tapes and snap lines, Tracy said " geometry is the basic principle behind street painting". In the same breath, she said, " I love manipulating spaces. To do it efficiently, one has to be aware of the right angles that need to be highlighted." When we asked her about her recordholding painting, ' The Last Supper', the painter said, " Though a commissioned work, it was a satisfying experience." Tracy dabbles in various art forms, from painting to decorative design, but street painting is her favourite. " It gives you instant gratification GRATIFICATION. A reward given voluntarily for some service or benefit rendered, without being requested so to do, either expressly or by implication. and is not permanent in nature, and this fascinates me the most," she said. Born and brought up in US, Tracy discovered her love for street painting 13 years back when she saw examples of chalk art at the plaza of the Old Mission Santa Barbara Mission Santa Barbara is a Spanish Franciscan mission near present day Santa Barbara, California. It was founded December 4, 1786, the feast day of Saint Barbara, to evangelize the local Chumash (Canaliño) tribe. in California. " My first reaction was ' Wow! I want to do that', and then I got myself enrolled immediately at an art college," she said. Simple as it may seem, Tracy insists her paintings have a deeper sub- text. " Many of my works are based on ancient myths and fables C* but I have a humorous take on them," she said. Referring to her famous painting of the Dalai Lama Dalai Lama (dä`lī lä`mə) [Tibetan,=oceanic teacher], title of the leader of Tibetan Buddhism. Believed like his predecessors to be the incarnation of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, 1935–, , Tracy said, " One day, I asked myself who I would like to play chess with, and the answer was the Dalai Lama." Demystifying art for common folk, she said " outdoor, spontaneous and easily accessible art" was the order of the day for new age artists. On the growing popularity of three- dimensional paintings, Tracy said that in a visually driven world " people can connect better with 3- D images." Well, people did connect with her art.
