This catalogue includes images and descriptions of all of the Mao badges of the Chinese Cultural Revolution that are housed in the British Museum's Department of Coins and Medals. The badges are arranged by types of Mao portrait and then by theme and material. Each badge is described in terms of shape, material, diameter, inscriptions and images on obverse and reverse, notes, and British Museum registration number. Inscriptions are presented in Chinese, pinyin, and English translation. Badges are presented at actual size in the color image plates. Also included are essays on Chinese badges before the Cultural Revolution, Mao badges as part of the milieu of the Cultural Revolution, the materials and manufacture of the badges, and the badges' visual imagery and inscriptions.
