Chairman's message: observations from Michael Tompkins.

I ENTER THE NEW YEAR as NAA's Chairman of the Board with a feeling of excitement about the new initiatives we have planned in accordance with our 2010 Vision. We will build even greater pride in our membership and communications, which will increase the value to your membership in the industry's leading advocate for quality rental housing. Each month, I will update you on our progress.

UNITS magazine, the most read publication in the industry, is one vehicle in which this message will be delivered. UNITS has taken its mission to serve as the apartment industry's resource to a new level. In this issue, you will notice reorganization in the look and in the way news is presented in UNITS.

The modifications make UNITS easier to navigate and give readers a snappier look at important industry trends, best practices and data. By providing this information in shorter items, tip lists and take aways, for example, UNITS' content will help you to improve your own business' operations and bottom line.

In every issue, UNITS will devote several pages to maintenance, marketing, management and legislation. Those are the four topics that our Harvey Ad-Q readership surveys and word of mouth have consistently shown to be the most popular and most sought after by readers and advertisers. These departments will be called Maintenance Insider, Marketing Insider, Management Insider and Political Insider (formerly Capitol Beat).

This month's cover story is about the country's ongoing dealings with the credit meltdown meltdown

This issue also provides another look at the exploding growth in student housing. I encourage you to attend NAA's Student Housing Conference: The Unique Life Cycle of Student Housing, scheduled for Feb 19-20 in Dallas.

UNITS will continue to serve as a vehicle for NAA to further promote its membership benefits. Be on the look out for materials and information enclosed en·close   also in·close

The NAA Education Institnte's (NAAEI NAAEI National Auctioneers Association Education Institute ) staff is continuing its aggressive efforts to improve the delivery of NAAEI's designation programs through online resources and information updates. It also continues its campaign to promote apartment careers as a viable career choice by forging partnerships with key workforce organizations. Details on these efforts are available at www.naahq.org.

Please e-mail me at michaelt@lecraw.com and let me know what you think of UNITS' new look and any other ideas on how to enhance communications.
