 has come a long way since appearing in his first of three cover stories for The Advocate. As part of our annual coming-out issue in 2001, the former child star talked with Bruce Vilanch Bruce Vilanch (born November 23, 1947) is an American comedy writer who caught the public eye when he became a wisecracking regular on the revamped Hollywood Squares with Whoopi Goldberg.

Vilanch was born into a Jewish family and is a practicing Jew.

"A guy that I was seeing sold photos of us kissing in a swimming pool to a tabloid," he recalled. I didn't want to say anything [but] I didn't want to lie."

Allen immediately told his family and braced himself for the story to hit the stands. "Just about everybody who knew me and cared about me gave me support," he said. "I wondered if CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  would find a way to make me disappear from Dr. Quinn. But they didn't. In the end, of course, it hasn't mattered."
