In line with the emerging trend of going with shorter names, law firm DLA Piper DLA Piper (known until 4 September 2006 as DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary) is the third largest law firm in the world by number of attorneys after Clifford Chance and Baker & McKenzie.  Rudnick Gray Cary US LLP LLP - Lower Layer Protocol  has truncated its shingle to DLA Piper US LLP. The abbreviation abbreviation, in writing, arbitrary shortening of a word, usually by cutting off letters from the end, as in U.S. and Gen. (General). Contraction serves the same purpose but is understood strictly to be the shortening of a word by cutting out letters in the middle,  comes 20 months after the merger of Piper Rudnick, Gray Cary Ware and Freidenrich and DLA DLA
