Cessna Selects Smiths Actuation Control for Mustang.

Business Editors

SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 2004

Smiths Aerospace has been selected by Cessna Aircraft to provide the rudder and aileron aileron: see airfoil; airplane.  trim tab Trim tabs are small surfaces connected to the trailing edge of a larger control surface on a boat or aircraft. The angle of the tab relative to the larger surface can be adjusted to null out hydro- or aero-dynamic forces and stabilise the boat or aircraft in a particular desired  actuators for the Citation Mustang 510. Cessna has taken orders for more than 200 Citation Mustangs. The first production aircraft is scheduled to fly in late 2005. The actuators will be manufactured at the Smiths facility in Rockford, Illinois Rockford is a mid-sized city located on both banks of the Rock River in far northern Illinois. Rockford is often referred to as "The Forest City" and is the county seat of Winnebago County, Illinois, USA. As reported in the 2000 U.S.  with the first units due in early 2005.

Notes to editors

About the actuator: The electromechanical actuator enhances the Mustang 510 with a dual load path and a 150-pound normal load, and a 575-pound limit load with a .75-inch stroke. The actuator weighs less than 2.5 lbs. and consist of a brush type rare earth permanent magnet motor, a conventional spur geartrain, two bull gear / jackscrew jackscrew: see screw.  combinations coupled together by a single spur gear, two drive nut/moveable output rams, and a feedback Rotary Variable Differential Transformer This article only describes one highly specialized aspect of its associated subject.

). The RVDT provides trim surface position information. The actuator is travel limited through the use of a pair of limit switches. The design includes non-jamming mechanical stops that limit the over-travel of the actuator rams. Smiths supplies a similar actuator on the Sino Swearingen SJ-30-2, and single ram designs on the CN-235, ERJ-145 & 170, F/A-18, F-14, Learjet 45 & 60, P-3, SK-60, and S-3s for various position control functions.

Smiths Aerospace has been supplying electromechanical actuators, air valves, and electronic temperature control and positioning systems to the aircraft industry for more than 67 years. The company's linear electromechanical actuators are used in numerous aircraft, marine and vehicular applications.
