Business Editors

SANTA PAULA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 2000

Ceryx Incorporated, a Santa Paula, Calif.-based designer, developer and manufacturer of emissions control systems for diesel engines, today announced the completion of the installation of its catalytic converters on three school buses participating in the South Coast Air Quality Management District's retrofit demonstration program.

Dr. William A. Burke, Chairman of the South Coast AQMD AQMD Air Quality Management District
AQMD Action Quake Map Depot
, proposed the program's launch on June 22, 2000 as part of an effort to retrofit buses now in service with diesel emission control devices and reduce children's exposure to diesel soot. The completion of these installations represents a major milestone in the move to protect children's health Children's Health Definition

.

Ceryx's patented four-way catalytic converter technology represents the type of system that lends itself to the school bus retrofit program. A significant portion of the school bus fleets in the greater Los Angeles area The Greater Los Angeles Area, or the Southland, is the agglomeration of urbanized area around the city of Los Angeles, California, United States. There are two "official" definitions—the Los Angeles metropolitan area consisting only of the Los Angeles and Orange  consists of older vehicles which require a high-performance emission reduction system.

The first of the three units, a 1978 school bus equipped with a Caterpillar 3208 diesel engine, will be tested in mid-November at test facilities located at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority This article is about the transit agency from 1951-1964. . Two of the buses operate out of the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  and the third is part of the Anaheim Unified School District's fleet. The results of this testing will be very valuable as Ceryx proceeds toward obtaining verification under a recently launched program of the California Air Resources Board California Air Resources Board (CARB) is the "clean air agency" of the state of California in the United States. Established originally in 1967, it is a part of the California Environmental Protection Agency, an organization which reports directly to the California .

Jeff Redoutey, Ceryx Vice President for Marketing and Sales, said, "Once proven, this application is an excellent example of the value of active regeneration and demonstrates that vehicles with high particulate matter emissions can be successfully retrofitted to greatly reduce the exposure of children to toxic air contaminants."
