The main campus resides atop Mount Oread.  School of Nursing expands to medical school; College of St. Scholastica also at the forefront of healthcare IT education

The University of Kansas School of Medicine and Cerner Corp. (Nasdaq:CERN CERN or European Organization for Nuclear Research, nuclear and particle physics research center straddling the French-Swiss border W of Geneva, Switzerland. ) announced today a program designed to bring healthcare information technology to the hands of future doctors. The leading healthcare IT company will partner with the school to provide clinical solutions and decision support in the education of the next generation of physicians.

"It's our hope that this partnership will offer future physicians an educational experience unlike any other," said Trace Devanny, Cerner president. "Bringing Cerner's solutions to the classroom enables students to be better prepared for their medical careers where information technology will play an increasingly larger role."

By applying Cerner solutions in the classroom, the school transforms the content, method and approach to healthcare education, and generates a team-based approach to learning across the various roles of the care team.

"As technology continues to help physicians improve the quality of patient care, we look to partners who are leaders in this field," said Barbara Atkinson, M.D., executive dean of the University of Kansas School of Medicine and vice chancellor vice chancellor

The program will expand an already strong partnership between Cerner and the University of Kansas. In 1999, Cerner and the University of Kansas School of Nursing began engineering a first-of-its-kind program that integrated Cerner's software into the classroom, teaching future nurses to document care and to view overall records in an electronic format. The program, called Simulated E-hEalth E-health Informatics A philosophy that empowers–E = electronic–health care consumers by bringing information, products and services online  Delivery System (SEEDS), officially debuted in the fall of 2001. The software offers information to nurses at the point of learning, enhancing their decision-making skills and increasing their critical thinking in a state-of-the-art laboratory featuring a simulated electronic medical record.

The College of St. Scholastica ushers IT into its health sciences program

The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. has also placed Cerner technology at the core of its curriculum within its health professional schools. This year, St. Scholastica became the first college to apply healthcare IT across all its health sciences disciplines simultaneously -- the direct result of a five-year partnership with Cerner.

The program, titled Advancing Technology and Healthcare Education Now at St. Scholastica (ATHENS), implemented Cerner solutions into the college's nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise physiology exercise physiology

"Information technology is an essential component of the healthcare system and incorporating it into education is critical," said Dr. Larry Goodwin, St. Scholastica president. "Medical, nursing and allied health professional programs must prepare students for an increasingly electronic workplace where IT is the backbone of healthcare."

Because of its leadership position in healthcare IT education, representatives from St. Scholastica will discuss its innovative educational program with David Brailer David Brailer is a public health official from the United States.
